In a display of innovative battlefield tactics, Ukraine’s 5th Separate Assault kyiv Brigade successfully targeted and eliminated a group of russian soldiers using a first-person view (FPV) drone connected via fiber-optic cable. The operation took place inside a section of the “Seversky Donets – Donbass” Vodokanal pipe, which the Russian forces were using as a shelter and staging area.

The brigade released video footage of the precision strike on their official Facebook page, showcasing the drone’s entry into the pipe and the subsequent explosion. Initial reports suggest that the entire Russian assault group was neutralized in the attack.

This technological edge allows Ukrainian forces to engage targets in previously inaccessible locations.

The use of FPV drones in warfare has been steadily increasing. According to a recent report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the proliferation of affordable and adaptable drone technology is reshaping battlefield dynamics, enabling smaller units to conduct reconnaissance, deliver targeted strikes, and disrupt enemy operations with greater precision.

A Pattern of Underground Tactics: Lessons from Kursk and Avdiivka

This incident is not an isolated case. As early as March, Russian sabotage groups attempted to infiltrate Ukrainian positions using the Urengoy-Pomary-Uzhgorod gas pipeline during the Kursk campaign. Ukrainian forces responded with artillery and HIMARS cluster munitions, resulting in casualties and the incapacitation of saboteurs trapped within the pipeline.

Similar tactics were also observed during the intense battles for Avdiivka, indicating a systemic reliance on pipes and tunnels for troop movement and protection.
