Celebrating Lifelong Cycling: A Province-Wide Search
The Uelzen Bicycle Museum is embarking on a unique initiative to honor the enduring spirit of cycling among senior citizens. Launching on March 28th and culminating on International Museum Day, May 18th, the museum seeks to identify Lower Saxony’s oldest active cyclist, celebrating their commitment to mobility and the joy of cycling.
More Than just a Ride: Cycling as a Symbol of Freedom
Whether it’s a classic Dutch bike, a modern e-bike, a vintage racing model, or a sturdy mountain bike, the bicycle represents freedom, health, and an enhanced quality of life. This campaign aims to recognize those individuals who have embraced these values throughout their lives.
According to recent statistics from the German Cyclist’s Association (ADFC), cycling among seniors is on the rise, with a 15% increase in cyclists over the age of 65 in the past five years. This initiative taps into that growing trend, highlighting the benefits of cycling for older adults.
A Two-Location Showcase of Cycling History
The Uelzen Bicycle Museum spans two locations. The main exhibit, featuring nearly 30 historical bicycles, is situated in the Stadt-Hamburg Passage. This location was established through the “Future-oriented Inner Cities and Centers” (ZIZ) funding programme, revitalizing a vacant storefront while showcasing the history of cycling. Alexander Hass, KTS operations manager, notes that the exhibit includes both classic bicycles and rare models.
The second part of the collection resides in the Uelzen Museum on Bahnhofstrasse, focusing on the evolution of the bicycle up to the mid-20th century. This exhibit illustrates the bicycle’s conversion from a simple mode of transport to a symbol of independence and personal liberty.
How to Participate: Calling All Senior Cyclists
The competition is open to cyclists aged 67 and older who actively ride bicycles. Registration is available both in person at the Bicycle Museum every Friday and Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM, starting March 28th and continuing until May 3rd, and online.
