The bodies of the two locals were found on Sunday as part of a large-scale search operation in an avalanche cone in the Tux Alps.
Two ski tourers aged 44 and 47 were fatally injured in an avalanche in the Tux Alps in the municipality of Tux (Schwaz district) on Saturday. The bodies of the two locals were found in an avalanche cone on Sunday as part of a large-scale search operation. The police said the avalanche probably caught and buried the two men while they were climbing the high Tamlspitze (2,608 meters).
The families of the tourers raised the alarm around 8 p.m. on Saturday after the two men did not return from their tour. The search for the missing people began on Saturday, but had to be interrupted around 12:45 a.m. due to the still very dangerous avalanche situation. The intensive search operation continued early Sunday morning around 6:30 a.m.
The crew of the police helicopter spotted several avalanches in the Tamlspitze area on Sunday, but it was not possible to search the entire area due to the weather situation. It was also too dangerous to deploy mountain rescuers and alpine police in the search area. Flights were operated whenever the weather permitted. When the signal from an avalanche search device was located north of the Tamlspitze at around 12.30 p.m., search parties were subsequently brought to this location. The first body was discovered around 1 p.m., and a little later – after another signal from an avalanche transceiver was received – the rescuers also came across the second dead winter sports athlete. Any help came too late for both of them. (APA)
