Two New Cases In The Centro Region…

27 cases of measles were confirmed in Portugal, indicated the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), between January 1st and May 5th – two more cases were registered last week.

According to DGS data, the two new cases of measles, an infection caused by a virus and considered one of the most contagious, were confirmed in the Central region.

According to the most recent epidemiological bulletin, 182 suspected cases were reported, of which 155 were discarded, said the general directorate, who highlighted the importance of immediate notification to ensure timely intervention in reducing transmission chains.

DGS data also reveals that, “in relation to the previous week, two new cases of measles were confirmed, both in the Central region”.

The majority of cases (14) were registered in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region. The North follows with eight cases, the Center with four and Madeira with one. Of these cases, four led to hospitalization.

Measles is an infection caused by a virus that is transmitted from person to person by air, through droplets or aerosols from infected people, such as coughing or sneezing.

According to the DGS, vaccination is the main measure to prevent infection and is free in Portugal.
