The images taken were analyzed by the photographers themselves, Lyle Krannichfeld and Brandi Romano, who realized that they had witnessed unique and surprising behavior.
Their photographs were sent to researcher Stephanie Stack, from the Pacific Whale Foundation, based in Maui, who led the study published in the journal Marine Mammal Science.
“They shared the photos with me for my opinion, and when I saw them, I was shocked,” says studio director Stephanie Stack.
