Rick Stein Expresses Sympathy for Gregg Wallace Amid MasterChef Investigation
TV chef Rick Stein has expressed his sympathy for TV presenter Gregg Wallace, who recently stepped away from hosting MasterChef due to a series of misconduct complaints. In an interview with The Telegraph, Stein acknowledged the unfortunate turn of events for Wallace, while also emphasizing the importance of adapting to changing social and media standards.
Rick Stein’s Concerns for Gregg Wallace
Stein, at 78 years old, said he feels “a bit sorry” for Wallace. He described the situation as “unfortunate,” particularly noting that it “would affect me terribly” if he were in a similar position. However, Stein made it clear that he does not “have any skeletons in a cupboard,” implying his own adherence to professional conduct.
“It’s sort of unfortunate if you are that sort of person that you can come a bit unstuck,” Stein explained.
Understanding the Shift in Media Conduct
Stein recognized Wallace’s personality as distinct from his own, but highlighted that Wallace’s behavior was outdated. The chef mentioned that one must understand that “things change” in terms of what is considered acceptable in today’s media landscape.
“It’s not so much that he was a nasty person,” Stein clarified. “He just didn’t realize that the wind had changed.”
The Impact of Social Media Accountability
Stein emphasized the role of his sons in helping him navigate the complexities of contemporary media. “They will instantly tell me, ‘listen, you can’t say this’,” he noted. This underscores the increasing influence of social media in guiding professionals on what constitutes appropriate behavior.
The chef also maintained that it’s crucial to adapt quickly to new social norms. “There’s no point in getting all stroppy about it,” he advised, reflecting a pragmatic approach to industry standards.
BBC’s Response to the Situation
In response to the allegations against Wallace, the BBC director-general, Tim Davie, and Charlotte Moore, the chief content officer, released a memo stating that the corporation would support Banijay UK in its investigation.
Notably, the most recent series of MasterChef: The Professionals continued to air despite the ongoing probe, but two MasterChef celebrity Christmas specials were removed from the BBC’s schedule in December 2024.
MasterChef’s Commitment to Welfare Processes
Banijay UK, the production company behind MasterChef, provided a statement addressing the welfare procedures in place. “MasterChef welfare processes are regularly adapted and strengthened,” they emphasized. “There are clear protocols to support both crew and contributors.”
The company highlighted multiple avenues for reporting issues, including anonymous channels, and made it clear that HR contact details and designated points of contact on set are available to discuss any concerns.

The Evolution of Entertainment Standards
Stein’s comments highlight the evolving nature of entertainment standards and the increasing accountability on media professionals. The past year has seen a significant shift in how social media platforms and viewers expect behavior from those in the public eye.
This case serves as a reminder that what might have been acceptable behavior in the past can be seen as problematic or unethical today. It underscores the need for continuous self-reflection and adherence to acceptable conduct.
Looking Forward
As the investigation into Wallace continues, MasterChef is set to proceed with new judges, including food critic Grace Dent alongside John Torode for the upcoming 20th series of Celebrity MasterChef.
For Stein, the future of shows like MasterChef hinges on maintaining high standards of professionalism and respecting the changing climate of acceptable behavior in entertainment.
Stein’s insights not only provide a perspective on Wallace’s situation but also serve as guidance for fellow professionals in the industry to navigate these challenging times.
