Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky spoke for several hours this Sunday, December 28, in Florida. At the end of this meeting, the two presidents expressed their satisfaction and welcomed the progress, despite a blocking point on the question of Donbass.

“Great”, “an honor”, “fruitful discussions”… Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky did not fail to rejoice in their meeting this Sunday, December 28, during a press conference which took place after the meeting.

For several hours, the two presidents, meeting at Mar-a-Lago in Florida at Donald Trump’s residence, discussed the peace plan to end the war in Ukraine. They then met with some of the European leaders to share progress.

“Agree almost 100%”

“I would say that at least 95% of progress has been achieved today. We have discussed all the subjects, in detail,” declared the American president, assuring that the two will meet again in the coming weeks.

The Ukrainian president also spoke of a “fruitful meeting”. “The discussions were great on a lot of topics. We discussed many points of this peace framework. We saw the security guarantees and we agree almost 100%,” he said.

Volodymyr Zelensky also announced that a meeting with Donald Trump and European leaders was planned for January.

The Donbass question

Despite progress mentioned by both parties, a major issue remains unanswered: the Donbass region.

“We do not agree regarding this region, it is one of the major complex points. It is a subject which has not been resolved but we are not far from it,” declared the tenant of the White House before adding: “Russia would like Ukraine to leave the Donbass, but it is a complex subject. We are moving in the right direction.”

For his part, Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that the American and Ukrainian teams “are working very closely on this issue”. “We have been working on it for more than a month, we have spoken, we have discussed our positions, and we must respect our law and our people. Our attitude and our position are very clear,” he added.

Towards a referendum to decide?

The question of a referendum to reach a solution for this region was also raised.

“The question of the referendum is one of the possibilities, it is a tool. We can organize it if there are very difficult points for our society and our people, because our people have the right to vote. This is a territory of our nation for generations,” said the Ukrainian president.
