Former President Donald Trump has announced plans to engage in discussions with China, commencing on Monday or Tuesday, regarding a potential agreement involving TikTok.
The former United States president indicated that the US is “pretty much” nearing a resolution concerning the sale of the short-video app, TikTok.
“I think we’re gonna start Monday or tuesday… talking to China – perhaps President Xi or one of his representatives – but we would, we pretty much have a deal,” stated TRUMP to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday.
TRUMP also mentioned the possibility of visiting XI Jinping in China, or a reciprocal visit by the Chinese leader to the US.
Both leaders extended invitations to each other for visits to their respective countries the previous month.
Last month, TRUMP also extended a deadline to September 17 for ByteDance, the China-based parent company of TikTok, to divest its US assets.tiktok boasts 170 million users in the United States.
Earlier this year, discussions were underway to possibly spin off TikTok’s US operations into a new American firm, primarily owned and managed by US investors. However, these plans were suspended after China signaled its disapproval following TRUMP’s imposition of notable tariffs on Chinese goods.
TRUMP acknowledged on Friday that any agreement would likely require approval from China.
When questioned about his confidence in Beijing’s approval, he responded: “I’m not confident, but I think so. President XI and I have a great relationship, and I think it’s good for them.I think the deal is good for China and it’s good for us.”
The June extension granted by TRUMP marked his third executive order to postpone the ban or sale of TikTok, providing ByteDance with an additional 90 days to secure a buyer or face a ban in the US.
TRUMP’s initial executive order, wich provided TikTok with a temporary reprieve, was issued on his first day in office, shortly after the supreme court upheld the ban. TRUMP issued the second executive order in April, setting the deadline for the sale or ban to June 19. The current deadline is now set for september.
In a statement released on the same day, TikTok expressed gratitude to TRUMP and JD Vance, stating, “We are grateful for President Trump’s leadership” and affirmed their commitment to “continue to work with Vice President Vance’s Office” to reach an agreement.
Democratic senator Mark Warner, the vice-chair of the Senate intelligence committee, criticized TRUMP for allegedly circumventing the law through an executive order.
“President XI and I have a great relationship, and I think it’s good for them. I think the deal is good for china and it’s good for us.”
