The president of the United States, Donald Trump, filed a lawsuit for $5 billion this Thursday against JPMorgan Chase, the country’s largest bank. The president accuses the entity of “political discrimination” and of excluding him from its banking services after the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, the firm confirmed to the Efe agency.

The legal action, filed by attorney Alejandro Brito in state court in Miami, maintains that the bank unilaterally violated its ethical principles by closing the accounts of Trump, his organization and his family members without prior notice or clear justification.

JPMorgan’s response

Through a spokeswoman, JPMorgan Chase described the lawsuit as lacking “merit,” although it expressed its respect for the judicial process. The entity flatly denied that the closures were for political or religious reasons.

“Decisions are made when there are legal or regulatory risks. Frequently, the strict regulations in force force us to take these measures,” explained the spokesperson, who also urged the current administration to reform the rules that force banks to act in this position.

Trump had already anticipated this measure on his social network, Truth Sociallinking the blocking of their accounts to the pressure derived from the riots at the Capitol while Joe Biden’s victory in 2021 was being certified.

A special congressional commission identified Trump as the “central figure” of a plan to reverse his electoral defeat, a conclusion that the Republican categorically rejects.
