US Power Plants to Face Weaker Pollution Regulations

New proposals aim to repeal climate rules, possibly increasing air toxins and greenhouse gas emissions.
Experts are warning that power plants in the US may be permitted to release greater quantities of air toxins and greenhouse gases into nearby communities and the environment because of proposed regulatory changes from the administration of DONALD TRUMP.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has introduced a plan to eliminate a significant climate regulation intended to largely eliminate greenhouse gases from power plants by the 2030s. Separately, it seeks to weaken another regulation limiting the release of dangerous air pollutants like mercury from power plants.
LEE ZELDIN, administrator of the EPA, stated at an event announcing the proposals, “We choose to both protect the environment and grow the economy.” He added that the rollbacks would save households money while opposing what he called “the climate change cult”.
ZELDIN stated that the climate rule has “saddled our critical power sector with expensive, unreasonable and burdensome regulations”. He went on to say, “American energy suffered and Americans who rely on reliable, affordable energy suffered. The good news is those days are over.”
The EPA’s proposals will be subject to public comment and are anticipated to encounter legal challenges.
They are aimed at a regulation developed last year by the BIDEN administration to phase out emissions from fossil fuel plants that generate electricity, which account for about a quarter of US greenhouse gases,as well as a regulation known as the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, which BIDEN strengthened in 2023 to reduce harmful pollution in communities.
these rollbacks occur despite overwhelming scientific data on the serious effects of the worsening climate crisis and the harm caused by pollutants like mercury, which can enter water, soil, and air and has been associated with neurological damage in young children and also heart, lung, and immune system disorders in adults.According to the EPA, coal-fired power plants are responsible for about half of all mercury emissions in the US.
More than 200 health experts wrote to the EPA on Wednesday, warning that the measures “would lead to the biggest pollution increases in decades and is a blatant give-away to polluters.” The experts added that the reversals are “a direct contradiction to the Environmental protection Agency’s mission of protecting public health and the environment”.
However,TRUMP has pledged to increase fossil fuel production at all costs, having received unprecedented donations from the oil and gas sector during his election campaign. At Wednesday’s EPA event, ZELDIN was accompanied by eight lawmakers, all Republicans – KEVIN CRAMER, TROY BALDERSON, BRETT GUTHRIE, CAROL MILLER, DAN MEUSER, ROB BRESNAHAN, MICHAEL RULLI, and RILEY MOORE – who have collectively received more than $3 million from fossil fuel donors in their own election campaigns, according to a review of the OpenSecrets database.
BRESNAHAN, a representative from Pennsylvania, has personal financial interests in more than 20 fossil fuel companies.
ZELDIN has asserted that US power plants only produce a small and declining proportion of global emissions in justifying the elimination of the BIDEN climate plan, which the EPA had previously projected would provide $370 billion in net benefits. This is despite the fact that if these power plants were a country, it would be the sixth-largest emitter in the world.
GINA MCCARTHY, who served as EPA administrator under BARACK OBAMA, stated that ZELDIN’s “dismantling of our nation’s protections from power plant pollution is absolutely illogical and indefensible. It’s a purely political play that goes against decades of science and policy review.”
She added, “By giving a green light to more pollution, his legacy will forever be someone who does the bidding of the fossil fuel industry at the expense of our health. Everyone will be affected by his actions, but the most vulnerable among us, our kids and grandkids, will suffer the most.”
Since TRUMP took office, the EPA has launched a thorough attack on environmental regulations, working to eliminate or weaken clean air and water regulations that, taken together, were expected to save 200,000 American lives in the coming decades.
TRUMP, who has embraced the slogan “drill, baby, drill,” has maintained that unrestricted fossil fuel production will lower energy costs, but he has also attempted to impede clean energy sources like solar and wind, which are typically the least expensive forms of new electricity generation.
the rollbacks occur after the second-hottest May on record globally and a record-hot 2024 that saw an unprecedented number of climate-related disasters and six weeks of extremely hot days. Experts have warned that sea level rise is predicted to cause “catastrophic inland migration,” including to millions of Americans, with climate shocks predicted to wipe 50% from global GDP by the end of this century.
PATRICK DRUPP, climate policy director at the Sierra club, said, “It’s completely reprehensible that DONALD TRUMP would seek to roll back these lifesaving standards and do more harm to the American people and our planet just to earn some brownie points with the fossil fuel industry.”
“This administration is transparently trading American lives for campaign dollars and the support of fossil fuel companies, and Americans ought to be disgusted and outraged that their government has launched an assault on our health and our future,” he added.
“by giving a green light to more pollution, his legacy will forever be someone who does the bidding of the fossil fuel industry at the expense of our health.”
