Trump Administration Targets California High-Speed Rail Amid Protests

The Trump Administration’s latest move against progressive transportation policies in blue states is directed at California’s high-speed rail project. During a visit to L.A. Union Station, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy criticized the 800-mile rail project, linking it to perceived fraud and waste. This comes shortly after the administration announced a review of the project.

Duffy’s criticism of the California High-Speed Rail (CAHSR) echoed charges first made by President Trump in an incoherent two-minute statement that included exaggerated claims about the project’s costs and even an absurd suggestion that hiring limousines would be cheaper.

During his visit, Duffy accused those supporting the rail project of advocating for “fraud, waste, and trains to nowhere.” He countered by asserting that his supporters do not support such projects, calling CAHSR a “boondoggle.”

Protests and Political Tensions

The rally, which attracted more than 60 supporters of the high-speed rail project, was marked by chants of “build the rail!” The tension between Duffy and his supporters and the project’s backers was palpable.

The conservative lawmakers accompanying Duffy echoed his criticism, emphasizing the need for road funding instead of rail infrastructure. Some suggested that California’s political leadership—and possibly their families—had benefited financially from the project, a claim that Duffy seemed to support.

Support and Opposition

Despite the criticisms, there are strong supporters of high-speed rail within the state. Senator Scott Wiener, who recently introduced legislation to expedite permitting for high-speed rail projects, issued a statement that focused on financial transparency rather than addressing Duffy directly.

Wiener linked Trump’s efforts to undermine California high-speed rail to the interests of Elon Musk, the richest man in the world. Wiener believes that successful public transportation could challenge Musk’s business interests, specifically Tesla and his Boring Company.

In contrast, CAHSRA CEO Ian Choudri defended the project, citing several key achievements: 171 miles of track are under construction, 50 structures have been completed, 14,600 jobs have been created, and over 880 small businesses are engaged. The project has already generated a $22 billion economic impact, primarily benefiting the Central Valley.

Background and Future Prospects

The opposition to the high-speed rail project has been persistent, with Republicans criticizing it for nearly two decades. Last week, Republican legislators wrote a letter to President Trump, pressing for an investigation into the project.

Despite the ongoing opponents, high-speed rail remains popular with California voters. A recent poll shows that 54.3 percent of respondents support the project, a figure consistent with previous polls.

Wiener vowed that California would find a way to continue the project, regardless of federal funding. “The project is happening,” he emphasized. “Sabotage from federal actors should never impede our responsibility to deliver affordable transportation for Californians.”

Conclusion

The criticism of California’s high-speed rail project by the Trump Administration highlights the ongoing political divide over transportation infrastructure. Despite accusations of fraud and waste, the project retains broad support among California voters and key state officials.

As the project moves forward, the dispute is expected to hinge on financial accountability and the overall impact on job creation and economic development. The Trump Administration’s actions will need to be carefully scrutinized, as the fate of this major infrastructure project hangs in the balance.
