Tropical Storm Rafael: Threatening Caribbean, Cuba Faces Further Strain

Tropical Storm Rafael, currently churning in the northwestern Caribbean, is poised to intensify into a hurricane, posing a significant threat to the Cayman Islands, Cuba, and parts of Florida.

Strengthening Storm on Course for Cuba

The storm, located south-southwest of Montego Bay, Jamaica, boasts maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h (60 mph) and is expected to strengthen further before making landfall in Cuba. Forecasters warn Rafael’s trajectory could exacerbate Cuba’s existing energy crisis, further burdening an island nation struggling to recover from Hurricane Oscar’s recent devastation.

Heavy Rains, Flooding Concerns

Heavy rainfall associated with Rafael is expected across the western Caribbean, potentially leading to widespread flooding and mudslides. Jamaica and parts of Cuba are predicted to receive 70mm to 150mm (3 to 6 inches) of rain, with isolated areas possibly seeing up to 250mm (10 inches).

The impact is not limited to Cuba. Heavy rainfall is anticipated to spread northward into Florida and the southeastern US during mid-week, with a possibility of tornadoes impacting the Florida Keys and southwestern Florida.

Evacuations Underway, Residents Urged to Prepare

Authorities have issued hurricane warnings for the Cayman Islands, western Cuba, and parts of Florida. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Jamaica, central Cuba, and parts of the Florida Keys.

Schools and government offices in the Cayman Islands have closed, with residents rushing to stock up on supplies. Jamaica has also implemented precautionary closures as the storm’s outer winds batter the island. Cuban authorities have ordered evacuations for approximately 37,000 people in the eastern province of Guantanamo.

Record-Breaking Hurricane Season

Rafael marks the 17th named storm of this year’s hurricane season, shattering records for Atlantic named storm formations. It’s the tenth storm to develop since September 24, surpassing the previous record of nine set in 1950.

With Rafael’s intensification, the 2024 hurricane season continues its trajectory toward exceeding predictions, highlighting the importance of preparedness and vigilance.
