Tropical Cyclone Zelia Looms Over Western Australia’s Pilbara with Potential for Heavy Rainfall and Flooding

The Bureau of Meteorology is closely monitoring Tropical Cyclone Zelia, a developing storm expected to bring substantial rainfall and potential flooding to the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Currently situated approximately 280 kilometers west of Broome and 270 kilometers northeast of Port Hedland, Tropical Cyclone Zelia is tracking eastward toward the Pilbara coast. This Category 2 cyclone is forecast to intensify to Category 3 strength by Thursday.

Significant Rainfall Predicted

Bureau state manager James Ashley expressed concern about the volume of rain expected from the cyclone. “The Pilbara region has already experienced above-average rainfall this summer, causing swift responses in river systems,” he noted. “We anticipate rainfall totals could exceed 500mm over the course of this event, which is highly significant for the region.”

Recent rainfall figures demonstrate the cyclone’s impact even before its full arrival. Port Hedland has received 75mm of rain since last night, and Pardoo recorded 82mm. While the heavy rain will provide much-needed moisture for the local pastoralists, it also heightens the risk of flooding.

Preparation and Safety Advisories

Communities from south of Broome through to Mardie and inland areas such as Nullagine are advised to prepare for the impending storm. Superintendent Leon Gardiner of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Kimberley emphasized the need for early preparation. “If we see winds exceeding 125kph, we will escalate to a cyclone watch and act, which means you should finalize your preparedness activities promptly,” he advised.

DFES Commissioner Darren Klemm added that residents should anticipate potential road closures, including the Great Northern Highway, likely to occur on Thursday. “Places like the North West Coastal Highway could be closed for up to a week or more,” he stated.

Transport Disruptions and Community Support

Transport providers and retail outlets are pre-positioning supplies to support remote communities. Remote Aboriginal communities like Bidyadanga have already received resupplies, and Dampier Peninsula will be resupplied today. The Bureau of Meteorology anticipates flash flooding and potentially destructive wind gusts of up to 160kph by Thursday.

The Town of Port Hedland assured residents that kerbside collections and landfill operations would continue under an advice level warning, with a temporary extension for waste drop-offs if a watch and act alert is issued.

Travel Advisories and Evacuation Plans

Incident controller Will Blackshaw advised travelers to reconsider visiting the region due to the approaching cyclone. “This is not a place for tents and caravans; substantial accommodation is required,” he stated. Some residents, like Bryan and Jenny Jenner, were already taking precautions by relocating to a friend’s house for safety.

Port Hedland, home to the world’s largest bulk export port by tonnage, is taking steps to ensure safety. Pilbara Ports are clearing berths and inner anchorages, with the port scheduled to close at 6pm.
