Trick ‘r Treat 4K Ultra HD Edition: Michael Dougherty Updates Sequel Progress

On the brand new Trick ‘r Treat 4K Ultra HD edition, which is now available from Arrow Video, writer-director Michael Dougherty shares some exciting updates on the long-anticipated sequel. In a recent commentary moderated by Dead Meat’s James A. Janisse and Chelsea Rebecca, Dougherty discussed the current status of Trick ‘r Treat 2.

A Backstory of Horror Classics

Dougherty explained that the bulk of our favorite horror movies, especially those that introduced new iconic characters, were once independent films. He cited Halloween, Friday the 13th, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as examples. These films achieved their success despite not having the usual metrics that studios can point to for quick approval.

The Challenge of Making a Sequels in the Studio System

The writer-director revealed that making a sequel under the studio system is complicated. Studios often seek straightforward metrics and easy approvals. Dougherty emphasized that he wants the sequel to retain its unique storytelling and the weird mix of horror and comedy that made the original so special.

“I want to do it. But I’m not going to compromise or make sacrifices just to get it made. I want the right conditions and resources,” said Dougherty.

Scripting the Next Chapter

Dougherty confirmed that he wrote Trick ‘r Treat 2 with his Krampus collaborators, Todd Casey and Zach Shields. The script is already storyboarded.

Despite the setbacks, Dougherty concludes, “But I’m very, very happy with the script for the sequel.” He expressed his willingness to let the project remain a “weird little movie” if the production conditions aren’t right.

New Graphic Novel Series for Sam Character

In the meantime, fans can look forward to four new stories featuring Sam in the upcoming Trick’ r Treat: Witching Hours graphic novel. This anthology promises to keep the beloved spirit of the original intact.
