Fraud Trial Heats Up: Former ARDA Chair Faces US$1.36 Million Land Scandal
The legal drama surrounding a potential multi-million dollar fraud case in Zimbabwe is about to reach a critical juncture. The trial of former Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) board chairperson, Basil Nyabadza, is set to commence tomorrow in Harare. Nyabadza is accused of defrauding Zanu-PF central committee member and outspoken war veteran Blessed Geza, known affectionately as “Bombshell,” out of a staggering US$1.362 million.
The Accusation
Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje detailed the allegations in court. According to her, the fraud originated from an agreement signed on October 29, 2020, when Geza purchased a 42.3504-hectare piece of land from Nyabadza for US$1,362,000. As per the terms of the agreement, Geza was granted total authority to subdivide, develop, and sell the land.
The Betrayal and Counterparty Discovery
Nyabadza allegedly assured Geza that the land had valid title deeds and promised to provide the documents within a month. However, Chirenje laid out how Nyabadza failed to deliver the promised title deeds. While Geza worked on securing subdivision permits from the Mashonaland West Department of Physical Planning, he discovered that the same plot had been sold to Velda Estates. His attempts to resolve the matter amicably were unsuccessful as he later found that the agreement of sale had been canceled without his knowledge.
A Complex Web of Allegations
The matter was reported to the police as a result of Geza’s concerns. Geza claims he was left without any financial recovery, having been punished for what he believes is a fraudulent act that resulted in his losing the full amount of US$1,362,000.
The Legal Process
During his appearance before Harare magistrate Tilda Mazhande, Nyabadza was represented by lawyer Tazorora Musarurwa. Originally scheduled to begin, the trial has been deferred until tomorrow.
Geza’s Political Stance
This case comes amid an intense period of political turmoil in Zimbabwe. Geza, well-known for his vocal criticism of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has recently called for his removal. Geza accuses Mnangagwa of mismanaging the economy and pursuing detrimental policies.
Polarization Within Zanu-PF
This stance from Geza contrasts strikingly with the push within Zanu-PF to extend Mnangagwa’s term of office until 2030. A resolution from the party’s annual conference in Bulawayo last year endorsed this “2030 agenda.” Despite these calls, Geza remains steadfast against Mnangagwa, urging resistance to the aim of prolonging the current administration.
