Traveling exhibition marks 60 years of the Portuguese community in Germany

A traveling exhibition, which kicked off last Sunday in Heinsberg, aims to mark 60 years of the Portuguese community in Germany through almost two dozen posters with themes such as associations, religion or gastronomy.

This chronological exhibition, with research work that began in October, marks the signing of the bilateral agreement between Portugal and Germany in 1964, and can be seen throughout the year in various parts of the country.

“We want to address different themes”, pointed out historian Nélson Pereira Pinto, member of Gri-Dpa, the Portuguese Diaspora Reflection and Intervention Group in Germany and responsible for the exhibition.

“We started with Portuguese emigration in general, and then we addressed the German case, the reasons that led the Portuguese to emigrate to Germany, the living conditions in Portugal, and the need for the Federal Republic of Germany to hire workers from other countries” , highlighted the author of this investigation carried out together with Anna-Katharina Glettenberg.

Alfredo Stoffel, president of Gri-Dpa, remembers that many of the Portuguese who arrived in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s came with a “cardboard suitcase”.

“Many were poor and had no knowledge of the language,

A real ultimatum: how the United States made Israel give in on humanitarian aid to Gaza

Are the signals from the White House, long ignored, bearing fruit? Israel announced this Friday to authorize the “temporary” delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip, besieged and threatened with famine, the day after an unprecedented warning from its major American partner.

This announcement comes at a time when international pressure is increasing on the Israeli government. United States President Joe Biden did not mince his words Thursday during a thirty-minute telephone conversation with Benjamin Netanyahu, telling his counterpart that American support – the most important on the military level – would depend on the implementation “tangible” measures in place to address the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Unprecedented remonstrations, although a White House spokesperson later tempered, assuring that the United States’ support for Israel remained “unshakeable”.

What impact does war have on the environment?

“I would have liked to know what the impact of wars is on the environment,” Dirk Mattelaer emails. All those bombs and missiles must leave their mark, he suspects.

Tamás Stadler of the Ludovika National University in Budapest agrees. He studies the pollution caused by armed conflict. We don’t even have to look far from home for that. Even now, more than a century after the First World War, the chemical traces of the clash of arms from ’14-’18 are measurable on the former battlefields.

During the First World War, many chemical projectiles flew through the air. “The gaseous or liquid compounds contaminated the air, soil and freshwater sources. In some places, for example the zone Rouge at Verdun, the soil still contains very high concentrations of arsenic and lead.”

Many heavy metals in the soil of war zones come from ammunition. The most notable heavy metals are lead, zinc and copper. But barium and antimony are also often used in the primers of projectiles. A notorious heavy metal is depleted uranium (U-238 isotope). It is rock hard and is therefore used in armor piercing ammunition.

Little Jinder

“Romance in Swedish”

(1000)

Show more Show less

Little Jinder has never been a stranger to drastic turns. After recording the indie-pop “Salta diamanter” with a band two years ago, a direction that felt like a potential way forward, on the eighth album she has made a U-turn. “Romatik på svenska” was recorded with the producer and childhood friend Johan Cederberg, alias HNNY, and is an electronic and dancing record – again.

At the same time, it is difficult to speak of an outright decline, because time is passing. In fact, its inevitable progression permeates a record that may not have the soaring highs of previous albums, but in return works better as a whole.

Time as a theme is noticeable already in the opening “Overture” where the three words “it was then” are repeated – an insight that then colors the subsequent eight songs. In a throng of details from the past, and to the tune of twenty years of echoes from the capital’s clubs, Jinder reflects again and again on “everything that breaks with the passing of time”.
