Smoke from intense Canadian wildfires has traveled across the Atlantic Ocean, reaching parts of Europe. The smoke, originating from large-scale fires in provinces like Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, is impacting air quality and causing striking sunsets in countries like Germany.

Canadian Wildfire Smoke Reaches Europe

Satellite data confirms that smoke from the Canadian wildfires has made its way to Europe. While the main concentrations of smoke are high in the atmosphere, their presence is still noticeable. The smoke is a result of unusually strong fire activity in Canada’s boreal forests since May.

Impact on Air Quality and Visibility

The smoke is traveling at altitudes between five and twelve kilometers, minimizing direct health risks on the ground. However, the presence of the smoke can lead to milky skies, reddish sunsets, and diffused sunlight. The Copernicus atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) indicates that the smoke clouds are not significantly impacting ground-level air quality in Europe.
