In Toulouse, the prospect of seeing the left display a united face in the second round of the municipal elections hangs on the position of the LFI candidate, François Piquemal, to whom the PS-Ecologists candidate, François Briançon, on the Mélenchon affair, at the heart of the controversies in recent weeks.
Ten days before the first round of the municipal elections, the battle for Toulouse town hall remains very open, although one unknown remains: what face will the left show if it qualifies for the second round? A PS-Ecologists-LFI alliance remains possible, in theory. François Briançon, who leads a PS-Ecologists list with nine other allies (including the Communist Party and Place publique), asked the LFI candidate, François Piquemal, to “clarify” his position after the recent polemical remarks of Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
In a press release, François Briançon pointed out the “repeated ambiguities” of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the polemical remarks “which damage the left”. He also denounced the behavior of outgoing right-wing mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc, who called on left-wing candidates to refuse any alliance with LFI.
Moudenc in bad shape in the second round in the event of an alliance on the left
François Briançon still believes that presenting a united left in the second round to bring down the right is possible. “Only the union of the two left-wing lists can allow alternation and give Toulouse a left-wing town hall,” he insisted in his press release.
According to an Ifop poll relayed by La Dépêche on February 19, Jean-Luc Moudenc would only qualify for the second round of municipal elections with three small points ahead of François Briançon (33% against 30%). François Piquemal would come third with 23%, well above the 10% required to possibly propose a triangular. If these data are confirmed, a Briançon-Piquemal alliance could well win the Toulouse town hall at the end of the second round.
François Piquemal targeted by death threats
After publishing his press release, François Briançon transmitted a new sign of support to François Piquemal, victim of death threats recently. Thursday, March 5, he expressed his “total solidarity” in a public message on X. “Political debate has nothing to do with violence, threats or intimidation. In a democracy, we fight ideas, never people.”
