For 168 years, the Trappist monks thrived in the tranquility of Sainte-Marie du Désert, dedicating themselves to prayer, work, and the upkeep of the abbey. However, in October 2020, with a dwindling community of only eight members, all over the age of 50, the Trappist community made the difficult decision to withdraw from the monument.

In a remarkable act of transition, the monks entrusted the abbey to the Village of François. This innovative community fosters an surroundings where the elderly,individuals with disabilities,and those experiencing homelessness can live,work,and support one another.

Today,the Village of François operates on principles of shared living,education,gardening,and animal husbandry.
