Toprak Razgatlioglu Claims His Second WorldSBK Title in Jerez

In a thrilling finale at the Jerez circuit, Toprak Razgatlioglu secured his second MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship title, marking a historic achievement in World Superbike history. Razgatlioglu, representing the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team, became only the third rider to win titles with two different manufacturers, following in the footsteps of James Toseland and Troy Corser. Notably, Razgatlioglu achieved this milestone without winning with Ducati, setting a new precedent in the sport.

Nicolo Bulega of Aruba.it Racing-Ducati took the top spot in Race 1 and the Superpole Race, but Razgatlioglu’s second-place finish on Saturday was crucial for claiming the championship. Razgatlioglu rounded off an exceptional season with his 18th victory, while Andrea Locatelli, Alex Lowes, and Michael van der Mark also secured podium finishes over the weekend.

Saturday: Razgatlioglu Wraps Up Second WorldSBK Title

Razgatlioglu entered Saturday’s Race 1 with a nine-point cushion, sufficient to secure the title irrespective of Bulega’s win. Bulega emerged triumphant, closely followed by Razgatlioglu. This result narrowed Razgatlioglu’s lead from 46 to 41 points, highlighting the exhilarating battle for the championship. Razgatlioglu not only claimed his second WorldSBK title but also brought BMW’s first championship in the category, solidifying his place as a pivotal figure in World Superbike history. Andrea Locatelli rounded out a strong season with a third-place finish, capping off a season rife with competitive battles.

The Best Possible Season End: Victories for Bulega and Razgatlioglu

The final showdown at Jerez concluded the championship, with the Tissot Superpole Race mirroring Race 1’s outcome. Bulega narrowly defeated Razgatlioglu by two seconds, with Alex Lowes securing third place. This victory marked Lowes’s best performance in WorldSBK, boasting a season total of 12 podium finishes, an impressive achievement for any competitor. In the afternoon’s race, Razgatlioglu claimed his 18th win of the season, surpassing Bulega once again to dominate the podium. Additionally, Razgatlioglu’s teammate, Michael van der Mark, finalized his year with a third-place finish, his second podium outside Magny-Cours, and fulfilling his dream of sharing a podium with his fellow champion team member.
