Uninvited Military Personnel Attend Student Consolidation

A national student consolidation event at the University of Indonesia (UI) became the centre of attention after the unexpected arrival of military personnel. The university management has stated that the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) were not invited and their presence was neither requested nor sanctioned by the UI Rectorate.

University Administration Responds

Arie Afriansyah, Director of UI public Relations, affirmed the university’s commitment to respecting student activities held within the campus grounds. He emphasized that the student event had received the necessary permits from the Rector’s office. UI respects every student activity that takes place on campus. Moreover, these activities have obtained permission, Arie stated, addressing concerns that arose after images and reports circulated on social media showing TNI members at the UI Student Activity Center (Pusgiwa) in Depok on Wednesday, April 16th.

The university maintains that the military’s presence was not at the invitation or initiative of the university itself. Related to this, the UI Rectorate has never invited the military to attend and attend the student consolidation event held at Pusgiwa, Arie clarified.

Student Event Details and Military Arrival

The national consolidation event, which took place on Wednesday evening, brought together representatives from various Student Executive Boards (BEM) and student organizations across Indonesia. The agenda included discussions, the formulation of stances on national issues, and the consolidation of the student movement.

According to reports,a number of TNI members,in uniform and using official vehicles, entered the Pusgiwa area around 11:00 PM local time. While there were no reports of repressive actions, the unexpected presence of the military personnel raised concerns and questions among the students present.

Student Response and Context

As of the time of this report, attempts to contact BEM UI for comment on the incident have been unsuccessful. The lack of immediate response from student representatives leaves the full impact and implications of the military’s presence still unclear.

This incident occurs amidst ongoing discussions about the role of the military in civilian affairs and the potential for militarization of university campuses. Similar concerns have been raised recently in other regions, such as Central Java, where officials have been accused of monitoring campus activities, leading to student unrest. These events highlight a growing tension between student activism and perceived surveillance or interference from external entities.

Broader Implications for Academic Freedom

The presence of the TNI at the UI student event raises critical questions about academic freedom and the autonomy of universities in Indonesia. Article 28E of the Indonesian Constitution guarantees freedom of association, assembly, and expression. The uninvited presence of military personnel at a student gathering could be interpreted as a violation of these rights, possibly creating an atmosphere of intimidation and self-censorship.

The incident also highlights the need for clear guidelines and protocols regarding the involvement of external entities, including the military, in university affairs.Transparency and accountability are essential to ensure that academic institutions remain spaces for open dialog, critical thinking, and the free exchange of ideas.
