A high-speed chase starting in Tennessee ended fatally in Huntsville when the suspect’s car crashed into a utility pole.
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A high-speed car chase that began in Tennessee ended in a fatal crash late Sunday night in Huntsville.
On Sunday, Aug. 17, just before 11 p.m., Huntsville Police were notified of a car chase initiated by the Fayetteville Police Department in Fayetteville, Tennessee. The suspect, driving recklessly, continued southbound on Highway 231/431 into Alabama, with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office joining the pursuit.
As the suspect crossed into Alabama, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office took over the chase in the Hazel Green area. The suspect continued south into Huntsville city limits, where Huntsville Police Department joined the pursuit to assist. However, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office remained the lead agency.
According to authorities, the driver approached a construction zone near Mastin Lake Road at a high rate of speed, lost control of the vehicle, veered off the roadway, and struck a utility pole.
The driver, identified as 21-year-old Austin Rian Gore, was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
HPD’s Traffic Homicide Unit responded to assist the Madison County Sheriff’s Office in the ongoing investigation. Officials say the full investigation into the crash is still underway.
