Nobody cares about ballet or opera anymore.
That’s what “Marty Supreme” star Timothée Chalamet said in a conversation with actor Matthew McConaughey for Variety. They discussed how film studios work to retain an audience with increasingly poor concentration.
Chalamet said then that he has respect for people who fight to keep cinemas alive, but added that:
– I wouldn’t want to work with ballet or opera where it’s like “Hey! Keep this genre alive”, even if nobody cares about it anymore, he says and continues:
– All respect to ballet and opera people out there. “Damn, I gave them the boot for no reason at all,” he laughed.
This has received reactions worldwide. The American opera singer Isabel Leonard writes in a comment on Instagram that she is “shocked that someone so seemingly successful can be so narrow-minded in his views on art while considering himself an artist”.
The Oscar winner actor Jamie Lee Curtis posted an incident on his Instagram asking “Why do some artists shoot down other artists?”.
Meanwhile, the Seattle Opera House has used Chalamet’s comment for marketing purposes. In a post, they write that anyone who uses the discount code “TIMOTHEE” saves 14 percent on selected seats for the set of “Carmen“.
Ahead of this weekend’s Oscars, Timothée Chalamet is nominated for a statuette for the third time. But according to US prediction market Polymarket, his odds of winning have dropped following the statement.
