The Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball is displayed at One Times Square, Friday, Dec. 27, 2024, in New York.
The crystal triangles that compose this year’s Times Square New Year’s Eve ball wereFully installed on Friday morning. This marks a rare event, as it is the first time in 10 years that all 2,688 triangles have been replaced simultaneously.
Stars of the Ball Installation
Pop star Pitbull and inventor Joy Mangano were among the notable figures who joined the ball installation team at One Times Square. Their presence added excitement to the event, which took place atop the iconic skyscraper where the 11,875-pound (5,386-kilogram) geodesic sphere will drop to symbolize the arrival of the new year.
The History of Times Square’s New Year’s Eve Ball
The tradition of dropping a ball to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Times Square dates back to 1907. Created by Jacob Starr, a young immigrant metalworker, the original ball was constructed of iron and wood and featured 100 25-watt light bulbs. It weighed 700 pounds (318 kilograms) and had a diameter of 5 feet (1.52 meters).
Over the last century and more, six iterations of the ball have been used in the celebration. Each new ball brings innovations and enhancements, including more lighting and larger sizes, reflecting technological advancements and the evolving tastes of New Year’s Eve revelers.
A Break in Tradition
There were two years when the ball drop did not take place – 1942 and 1943. During World War II, the city initiated nightly “dimouts” to keep themselves safe from potential air attacks. Instead of the ball dropping, crowds observed a moment of silence followed by chimes rung from One Times Square.
Anticipation for 2025
As New Year’s Eve approaches, excitement builds in NYC and around the world. The fully installed 2025 ball, with its sparkling diamonds and lights, promises to deliver a breathtaking spectacle. Fans of the New Year’s Eve celebration can look forward to this dazzling tradition that has become a symbol of hope and new beginnings.
