The tiger mosquito has established itself throughout metropolitan France, raising concerns about the spread of tropical diseases. The mosquito is a known vector for diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika, all of which pose a threat to public health.Recently, two individuals in Hérault and Var contracted possibly fatal illnesses.

Identifying a Tiger Mosquito Bite

Chikungunya Concerns and Reunion Island deaths

Chikungunya is a notable concern, with Public Health France (SPF) reporting that 10 to 40% of cases are asymptomatic. The incubation period ranges from 3 to 7 days, and symptoms can be severe.These include fever, chills, headaches, nausea, vomiting, joint and muscle pain, and rashes.

Intense pain in the wrists, ankles, and fingers is also characteristic of chikungunya. antoine Flahault, epidemiologist and director of the Global Health Institute of the University of Geneva, notes that the name “chikungunya” originates from a Tanzanian dialect meaning “to be curved,” referring to the joint pain caused by the infection.

In severe cases, chikungunya, like dengue, can lead to hemorrhaging and potentially be life-threatening. As of May 28, 2025, 15 deaths were confirmed as being linked to chikungunya, on Reunion Island.

Dengue and Zika Viruses

Dengue is often asymptomatic in 50 to 90% of cases, according to SPF. For those who experience symptoms, the incubation period is typically 4 to 7 days. The symptoms and complications are similar to chikungunya, but without the intense joint pain.

The Zika virus causes symptoms in 50 to 80% of infected individuals, including rashes, fever, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, headache, and retro-orbital pain. These symptoms usually last for a few days and then subside. Zika can also be transmitted sexually.
