TIFF 2025: Jacob Elordi, Charli XCX, and Other Stars Who Lit Up Toronto

A look at the celebrities and memorable moments from the 50th Toronto International Film Festival.


The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) recently wrapped up after ten days of premieres and celebrity sightings.

The festival began on Thursday, Sept. 4,with the premiere of John Candy: I Like Me,a tribute to the Canadian comedian.

Stars graced the red carpet to promote documentaries and potential Oscar contenders. here are some of the celebrities who made their mark on Toronto’s entertainment district.

Jacob Elordi

Jacob Elordi, who filmed Guillermo del toro’s Frankenstein in Toronto, returned for the film’s North American premiere on Sept.8.

elordi expressed his enthusiasm for bringing the film back to the city where it was created.

“I love Toronto; it’s a great place for making films, and the city really loves movies in a sincere way,” Elordi stated.

Elordi felt cozy playing the titular role because of one reason.

James McAvoy

James McAvoy also attended TIFF.

Though, McAvoy’s TIFF experience wasn’t entirely positive. While at a bar near the festival,McAvoy was punched in the face,seemingly without provocation. A source close to McAvoy told CBC News that a man at Charlotte’s Room bar punched the actor-director while being escorted out.

McAvoy was reportedly unharmed. He did not comment publicly on the incident but thanked festival audiences in an Instagram post and said he enjoyed his time at TIFF.

Charli XCX

The pop star ventured into film this year, with two films premiering at TIFF.

Charli dined at Cafe Renée on her first night in Toronto, according to a photo diary for Interview Magazine.

In Eruption, she plays a woman who reconnects with someone from her past during a vacation in Poland with her boyfriend. The after-party took place at Vinny, a vinyl bar on King Street, where Charli was joined by co-stars Jeremy O. Harris and Lena Góra.

The singer-actor returned to the red carpet for Sacrifice, Romain Gavras’s satirical film about activists attempting to take over a climate conference.

Her photo diary also captured nights out at Gucci’s post-screening festivity of Sacrifice at Daphne in the financial district.

Sydney Sweeney

Vinny also hosted several other post-screening events, including the premiere party for Christy, a biopic about boxer Christy Martin, starring Sydney Sweeney.

Critics have praised Sweeney’s performance, suggesting it could lead to a best actress Oscar nomination.

Before the screening, martin commended Sweeney’s readiness for the role. Sweeney learned to box for the film and performed her own fight scenes.

“In fact, I have a contract in my room. I’m going to see if I can sign her up,” martin joked.

Martin said viewers can expect “a side of Sydney Sweeney that no one’s seen before, and they’re going to be amazed.”

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie arrived at Vinny after a screening of her film Couture with other cast members.

She also signed autographs outside the BISHA hotel, where the Deadline portrait studio was hosted.

In the movie, Jolie plays a film director whose life changes when she receives a cancer diagnosis. Given her own choice to have a preventative double mastectomy, Jolie said taking on the role was both challenging and therapeutic.

Daniel Craig

the former Bond star was in Toronto to promote his third Knives Out film as detective Benoit Blanc.

This film differs slightly from the others, focusing on “religion and faith, and the good and the bad of that,” Craig said. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is set in a gothic catholic parish in a small New York town,where Craig’s character investigates the murder of the priest.

Director Rian Johnson credits Toronto International Film Festival fans as a reason why he’s picked the festival for the world-wide premiere of his Knives Out franchise three times in a row.

Despite its religious themes, Craig says this Knives Out movie remains a classic whodunit.

The mystery features a star-studded cast, including Mila Kunis, josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, and Jeremy Renner. Many of the cast members reportedly dined at estiatorio Milos after the screening.
