THW Kiel won the 116th Schleswig-Holstein derby against SG Flensburg-Handewitt and collected two important points in the fight for a Champions League place. In front of 10,285 spectators in the sold-out Kiel Arena, the record champions prevailed with 37:33 (23:17). The best throwers were Lukas Zerbe, Veron Nacinovic and Eric Johansson with six goals each for the THW and Lasse Möller with 14 goals for the SG.
After the two games in the European League, the guests had to do without national player Marko Grgic in the third derby in just under four weeks. The 22-year-old remained ill in Flensburg. For Kiel, however, Elias Ellefsen á Skipagøtu was back after a seven-game injury break. However, the Faroese remained on the bench throughout the entire encounter

National goalkeeper Andreas Wolff was there to help free throws from Flensburg’s Johannes Golla and Simon Pytlick, laying the foundation for Kiel’s 4-1 lead in the 7th minute. When Zerbe increased the lead to 11:7 (14th), SG coach Ales Pajovic took the first timeout. The Slovenian asked his team to talk for the second time at 13:20 (25th). The mood among the Kiel fans was already great.
Flensburg struggled without Grgic, especially from the backcourt. Only Lasse Möller exuded danger. However, there wasn’t enough from Pytlick, Niclas Kirkelökke and Kent Robin Tönnesen. The “Zebras”, who scored from all positions, were completely different.
Kiel remained dominant in the second half. Johansson and Nikola Bilyk made everything clear early on with spins to make it 29:20 (38th) and 30:20 (39th). With the third win in a row over their northern rivals, THW expanded its derby record with five draws to 68:43 successes.
