On Tuesday, January 6, Cook County Commissioner Frank J. Aguilar hosted his sixth annual Three Kings Day celebration at his district office. More than 300 children attended receiving toys that were donated by Pastor Al of Toys of the Ark, Pastor John Harrell of New Hope MBC of Chicago and the Naranjo Foundation. Attendees also had the opportunity to drink hot chocolate, which was donated by Aracelis Bakery, and eat Rosca de Reyes, donated by Rincón Family Services. Affiliated with Commissioner Aguilar were Village of Lyons, Rincon Family Services, Toys of the Ark, Pastor John Harrell, the Naranjo Foundation and Get Covered Illinois. Cook County Circuit Clerk Mariyana Spyropoulos and Lyons Mayor Chris Getty also attended. Three Kings Day, also known as the Epiphany Festival, celebrates the last of the twelve days of Christmas. The festival celebrates the biblical story in which the Three Kings, or Three Wise Men, visit the baby Jesus after his birth. In keeping with the Chicano culture of many District 16 residents, the Rosca de Reyes, a mile-long sweet bread representing a King’s crown, was also available for residents to enjoy.
