Thousands Left Without Compensation After Devastating Storm Eowyn

Storm Eowyn, a powerful gale with winds exceeding 180 km/h, left a trail of destruction and widespread power outages across the country. Despite the efforts of ESB Networks, thousands of households remain without electricity, and unfortunately, many will not be eligible for compensation.

Storm Eowyn’s Impact on Electricity Supply

Historic Storm Eowyn, which struck last week, caused significant disruption, bringing gale-force winds and triggering extensive power outages. A staggering 768,000 ESB customers lost power on Friday, and approximately 250,000 households are still without electricity as of yesterday.

ESB Networks has mobilized its teams to restore power as swiftly as possible. By yesterday afternoon, they had successfully restored supply to 438,000 premises. However, significant challenges remain, with 250,000 customers still awaiting power restoration.

No Compensation for Power Outages Caused by Storms

Despite the hardship faced by thousands of households without electricity, ESB Networks has confirmed that no compensation will be provided for power outages caused by storms or extensive disruptions.

An ESB spokesperson stated, “In exceptional cases such as storms or extensive disruption to electricity supplies, we cannot offer compensation.”

Understanding ESB’s Compensation Policy

While compensation is typically not available for power outages caused by natural disasters, customers may still be eligible for compensation under different circumstances.

ESB has outlined specific guarantees in its document, “Our 12 Service Guarantees To You,” which provides details on their restoration commitments. According to the guide, customers may claim compensation if their power is out for more than 24 hours after notifying ESB.

Domestic customers can claim €65, while businesses qualify for €130 for each 24-hour period of outage. Every additional 12 hours of outage can result in an extra €35 in compensation.

Claimants must contact ESB within one month of the power outage to initiate the compensation process.

ESB Networks also advises customers to check their fuses and trip switches if their neighbors still have power. A failed main ESB fuse could be the cause, necessitating immediate contact with the utility company.

The company guarantees a callback within three hours if customers report an outage between 8:30 am and 11 pm. Calls made after 11 pm will receive a callback by 11:30 am the following day.

ESB will pay €35 if their service guarantees are not met.

Furthermore, ESB ensures that compensation cheques are sent within 10 working days. Failure to meet this deadline will result in an additional €35 payout.

Conclusion

While Storm Eowyn has wreaked havoc, causing widespread power outages and affecting thousands of households, the compensation eligibility remains limited for such events. Customers are urged to monitor their power outages and follow ESB’s guidelines for making claims when possible. As ESB Networks continues to restore power, staying informed is crucial for navigating through these challenging times.
