They discover a molecular mechanism related to the death of neurons

2024-02-09 13:45:01

The human brain is an organ that consumes about 20 to 25 percent of the energy required by the entire body. This high energy demand for neuronal functions depends on the transport and precise distribution of mitochondria—the cellular organelles that generate energy—in each neuron. Now, a study identifies for the first time a molecular complex that regulates the transport of mitochondria within neurons and neuronal death. The discovery of the complex, present exclusively in the most evolved mammals, could help find new therapeutic targets against neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, neuromuscular pathologies or even some types of tumors.

The work, carried out with animal models and cell cultures, is led by Professor Eduardo Soriano, from the University of Barcelona (UB) and the Institute of Neurosciences of the UB (UBneuro) and the Networked Biomedical Research Center on Neurodegenerative Diseases ( CIBERNED), and the researcher Anna María Aragay, member of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB) of the CSIC.

The study, whose first authors are Ismael Izquierdo (IBMB), Serena Mirra and Yasmina Manso (UB and cybernet), also highlights the participation of Adolfo López de Munain,

Protecting From Lead Poisoning: Sources, Effects, and Solutions

2024-02-09 13:53:00

The World Health Organization has classified lead as one of the main chemicals of public health concern, and has called for necessary measures to protect workers, women, and children from the risk of poisoning. Knowing that its seriousness, which may lead to death, is rarely highlighted. Today, speculation about it has returned with the spread of the presence of lead in Stanley cups. Hence, it is necessary to shed light on lead, its sources, and its effect on the human body?

Stanley cups

The trend of “Stanley cups” spread on various social media sites, after some users noticed the presence of lead at the bottom of the cup, which sparked controversy and concerns about the materials used in manufacturing these cups.

A spokesman for the “Stanley” company confirmed that it uses lead at the bottom of the cup, to be an insulating part of the cup itself, which is covered with a layer of stainless steel to protect consumers from exposure to lead, and it cannot be accessed unless the stainless steel barrier is separated, which is possible, but ” rare”. Although it poses a danger if the cover at the bottom is separated,

What do your tonsils do?

#tonsils

They just hang in the back of your mouth, and if they bother you, you have them cut out: the tonsils. Sounds useless, but your tonsils were pretty indispensable during childhood.

So many lumps and bumps in your throat

Surprise: you have three types of almonds. The tonsils have the most fame, they are sometimes eligible for a haircut. These two are located at the back of the throat, on either side of the uvula, the tissue that hangs from the ceiling.

Less known is the tonmandel, which lies at the back of the tongue. If you can stick your tongue out far enough, you can just see the bumps emerging, like little warts on the surface.

And then there is the most unknown of the bunch: the neusamandel. There is no way you can see it, because it is located at the back of the nasopharynx, where air finds its way down from your nasal canal. So in total you have tonsils in three places, which only increases the question: what’s the point?

Your tonsils will help you through the tropical years of your youth

As a newborn baby you are immediately faced with a major challenge.

The Power of Prayer: Asking for Prosperity and Well-being

Prayer and Prosperity: The Power of Psalm 144

For many people, prayer is a vital part of their daily routine. It is a way to communicate with a supreme being, to give thanks, and to express requests and needs that arise in life. While prayer is a personal and meaningful practice for many, it is also an important aspect of the Gospel and a way to draw closer to God.

Prayer is used to seek blessings in many aspects of life, such as health, tranquility, well-being, work, children, and family. It is also a means to ask for prosperity and well-being at different times. Psalm 144 is one of the prayers used specifically for asking for prosperity and well-being.

In Psalm 144, the author acknowledges the Lord as their rock and protection in times of battle. They seek deliverance from tumultuous waters and the power of strange people. They ask for provisions, growth, and blessings for their community.

This prayer demonstrates the belief in the power of prayer to ask for prosperity and well-being. It highlights the faith and hope that believers place in their communication with God through prayer.

It is clear that prayer is more than just a simple act of asking for something.

New Study Shows GLP-1 Drugs Linked to Reduced Risk of Depression and Anxiety, Further Supporting Mental Health Benefits

Exploring the Positive Effects of GLP-1 Drugs on Mental Health

A recent study conducted by health analytics organization Epic Research has shed light on the potential mental health benefits of GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic/Wegovy. While these drugs have long been recognized for their effectiveness in aiding weight loss, new evidence suggests that they may also play a role in reducing the risk of depression and anxiety among patients.

The study, which analyzed a database representing over 200 million patient records, compared individuals who were prescribed GLP-1 drugs to control groups who were not. The findings revealed that patients who took GLP-1 drugs had a lower likelihood of being diagnosed with depression or anxiety in comparison to those not on the medication.

It’s important to note that while these findings do not establish a definitive cause-and-effect relationship, they contribute to an increasing body of evidence indicating that GLP-1 drugs are generally safe for mental health. This is reassuring news for both healthcare providers and patients seeking effective treatment options.

Prior studies from Epic Research have also explored the real-world outcomes of GLP-1 drug usage. For instance, researchers discovered that many former users continue to maintain their weight loss even after stopping their medication.

Viennese on new genetic engineering: Disaster for agriculture, the environment and those who eat 2024-02-09 15:48:47

The EU Parliament voted today to bring new genetic engineering onto the market with almost no restrictions in the future. Only the agricultural industry benefits from this, warns Wiener.

Strasbourg (OTS) – Just six months ago, the European Commission proposed a serious change to EU genetic engineering law that would affect so-called NGTs, i.e. plants that have been modified using new genetic engineering (genetic scissors). Now the proposal has been waved through in plenary session – with serious consequences.

Sarah Wiener, Green MEP and member of the Environment Committee, comments: “Ahen the Commission proposed the Farm-to-Fork strategy for a sustainable food system, it gave hope for the urgently needed agricultural transition. Measures were promised to reduce pesticides, reduce food waste and increase animal welfare, reduce antibiotics and make food labeling more transparent – but nothing remained. Only the deregulation of the new genetic engineering, which was mentioned in passing in Farm-to-Fork, is being implemented and is a disaster for agriculture, the environment and those who eat. A lack of labeling in supermarkets deprives EU citizens of their freedom of choice and the release of genetically modified organisms has unknown effects on our ecosystems. In addition,
