Theo Weterings (66) will stop as mayor of Tilburg on 31 August. He has been mayor of the Brabant city for almost eight years.

He does not finish his tenure, which would last until 2029. Weterings sees the intensity of his work and the long working weeks in their own words more and more as a disability. He dismisses the office chain so that he has “time and space for joint activities” with his wife in the coming years, he writes in a statement.

Hometown

Weterings (VVD) was born in Tilburg and also grew up. More than forty years ago, his political career also started in the city, as a councilor. He says that he has always enjoyed the mayor in Tilburg since 2017. “Residents and a city to be proud of. I still experience that feeling every day. A feeling that I will keep up with now that I will say goodbye as your mayor.”

The economist was mayor of Beverwijk and Haarlemmermeer for this. He was also a councilor in Tilburg (1982-1985) and Diemen (1986-1990) and councilor and alderman of Rijswijk (1994-2001). Between 1999 and 2001 he was a member of the States of the province of South Holland.

Coffee shops

In recent years, Weterings has committed himself to legalization of weed cultivation and sale. Like the Breda mayor Depla, he is a strong proponent of the weed experiment, which was already started in both cities in 2023. Later other municipalities also joined.

“Tolerated, that is such a strange word, we only know that in the Netherlands. Let it become legal, then it really belongs to all neighborhoods of Tilburg. Just like the café and the liquor store. In which we of course have to point young people to the dangers of addiction,” he told Omroep Brabant earlier.
