Theatre has a rich and vibrant history, filled with groundbreaking performances and influential figures. This retrospective explores key moments in theatre over the past century, celebrating milestones and the artists who shaped them.
jeannette Clift George: A Texas Theatre Pioneer (1925)
Born in houston, Texas, on June 1, 1925, Jeannette Clift george distinguished herself as an actress, playwright, and director. An alumnus of The University of Texas at Austin department of Theatre and Dance, she also received honorary degrees from Dallas Baptist University and Houston Baptist University. While she gained recognition for her work on stage and screen, including a Golden Globe nomination for The Hiding Place, George left a lasting impact on Houston’s theatre scene. In 1967, she founded the A. D. (After Dinner) Players Theater Company, wich, according to its website, produces plays “from a Christian world-view for diverse audiences.” George passed away in 2017 at the age of 92.

The Wooster Group‘s Experimental Debut (1975)
The Wooster Group premiered their first production, Sakonnet Point, on June 12, 1975, at The Performing Garage in New York City. The show ran until June 27,with subsequent performances over the following years. Composed by Spalding gray and Elizabeth LeCompte, and directed by LeCompte, the performance saw Willem Dafoe join the cast in later iterations.LeCompte went on to direct over 50 works with the company. The Wooster Group is known for creating postdramatic work for theatre, dance, and media. Theatre researcher Hans-Thies Lehmann noted in his book Postdramatic Theatre that the Wooster Group’s aesthetic “makes use of video,film,electronic sound effects,microphones,and computer programs to disrupt,fragment,and infract the dramatic text.” The company has become a cornerstone of experimental theatre.
Also in 1975, City Theatre Company in Pittsburgh (known then as The City Players) launched their first production, the world premiere of The Death and Life of Sneaky Fitch by James L. Rosenberg, on June 19. The original company and production featured mainly Carnegie Mellon School of Drama graduates. The City Players was established by the City of Pittsburgh and funded thru the Extensive Employment and Training Act, operating from the renovated Allegheny Public Theatre. In 1988, the City Theatre Company became an self-reliant entity and is now a leading producer of new theatrical works.
Falsettoland Premieres Off-Broadway (1990)
Falsettoland, the sequel to 1981’s March of the Falsettos, debuted at Playwrights Horizon on June 28, 1990. This one-act musical follows the characters from the original show as they grapple with the AIDS epidemic, which in 1992 became the leading cause of death for men aged 25-44. With a book by William Finn and James Lapine,and music and lyrics by Finn,Falsettoland received the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical,the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics,and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical. finn and Lapine later combined March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland into the full-length show Falsettos, which won the 1992 Tony awards for Best Book and Best Score.
Zoot suit Comes to Chicago (2000)
Luis Valdez‘s Zoot Suit premiered in Chicago at the Goodman Theatre. Inspired by the 1943 “Zoot Suit Riot” in Los Angeles, the play tells the story of Henry Reyna, a gang leader tried for murder, set against a backdrop of mambo dancing and original Big Band music by Daniel Valdez. The play originally premiered in Los Angeles in 1978, debuted in New York City in 1979, and was adapted into a film released in 1981. Valdez, who founded El Teatro Campesino (The Farm Workers’ Theater) in 1965, remains a prominent voice in Chicano theatre.
The 74th Tony awards Postponed (2020)
The 74th Tony Awards, initially scheduled for June 7, 2020, were postponed indefinitely due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This marked the first year since the awards’ inception in 1947 that no ceremony was held. The awards were eventually held on September 26, 2022.
