Mezdra-Botevgrad Speed Road Construction Faces Scrutiny Amidst Delays and Public Concerns

Ongoing issues plague the construction of the crucial Mezdra-Botevgrad speed road, prompting further inspection and raising concerns among local communities.

Ministerial Inspection Amidst Persistent Setbacks

Minister of Regional Advancement and Public Works, Ivan Ivanov, is conducting a follow-up inspection today on the Mezdra-botevgrad speed road construction project. This marks the second inspection within a month, highlighting the ongoing challenges and delays impacting the project’s timeline.

Landslides and Construction Halts Plague Progress

The speed road project, initiated in October 2019, has been considerably hampered. Most recently, seven new landslides were reported in November 2024, further delaying progress. These geological challenges add to the existing setbacks, including a previous work stoppage following a change in government in June 2023.

The repeated disruptions have pushed back the anticipated launch of the Mezdra section, now tentatively scheduled for June with a temporary traffic management plan.

Community Discontent Over Rerouted Traffic

The resumption of construction in June 2023 led to the diversion of traffic, particularly heavy goods vehicles, through local settlements. This has sparked considerable dissatisfaction among residents, who report rapid deterioration of road surfaces, excessive speeds of trucks, and vibrations causing damage to nearby homes. the situation mirrors similar infrastructure project disruptions globally, where local communities often bear the brunt of construction-related inconveniences.

The increased heavy vehicle traffic is not only damaging our roads but also threatening the structural integrity of our homes. We need immediate action to mitigate these impacts.

Urgent Road Maintenance Request

In response to the escalating concerns, the municipality of Meir, Mezdra, represented by Ivan Asparuhov, has formally requested the Road Infrastructure Agency to undertake immediate maintenance on hazardous sections of the road between Mezdra and the village of moravitsa. A 48-hour window has been provided for these essential repairs.

Looking ahead: Addressing the Challenges

The Mezdra-Botevgrad speed road project, intended to improve connectivity and reduce travel times, faces critically important hurdles. Addressing the geological instability, managing traffic flow effectively, and mitigating the impact on local communities are crucial for the prosperous completion of this vital infrastructure project. Continued monitoring and proactive measures are essential to ensure the project stays on track and minimizes disruption to residents.
