Sting Faces Lawsuit from Former Police Bandmates Over Royalties

Allegations Surface Regarding “Every Breath You Take” Credits and Compensation

Tensions appear to be escalating within The Police, as guitarist Andy Summers and drummer Stewart Copeland are reportedly suing vocalist/bassist Sting (Gordon Sumner) in London’s High court. According to reports, the lawsuit falls under the category of “general commercial contracts and arrangements,” with Summers and Copeland claiming they are owed millions in royalties.

While the specific details of the filing remain undisclosed, it is indeed believed that the legal action involves claims related to the hit single “Every Breath You Take” from the album *Synchronicity*. Sting has been credited as the song’s co-writer since its release. However,Summers has maintained that he penned the signature guitar riff and was not adequately credited or compensated.

Adding an unexpected twist to the situation, Sting and Summers recently collaborated on a jazzy rendition of the 1983 track “Murder by Numbers” for jazz musician Christian McBride’s album, *Without Further Ado, Vol. 1*,set to be released this Friday. This marks the first musical collaboration between members of The Police since Sting contributed to Summers’ 1990 album, *Charming Snakes*. The Police officially disbanded in 1986 and did not produce new music during their reunion tour in 2007-2008.

The song “Every Breath You Take” has been the subject of controversy in the past. in 2023, Sean “Diddy” Combs stated that he pays Sting $5,000 daily for the unauthorized sampling of the song in his 1997 Notorious B.I.G. tribute, “I’ll Be Missing You.”

while the veracity of this claim has been questioned, some reports suggest the actual figure is closer to $741,000 annually. In a 2003 interview with *Rolling Stone*, Sting recounted being alerted to the unauthorized sample by Elton John, who remarked
