UGM Faces Renewed scrutiny Over president Jokowi’s Diploma

Protests Erupt at Gadjah Mada University

YOGYAKARTA – A demonstration led by the Ulama and Activist Defenders Team (TPUA) unfolded at the Faculty of Forestry, gadjah Mada University (UGM), this Tuesday morning. The core demand of the protestors centered on the verification of President Joko Widodo’s, also known as Jokowi, academic credentials.

The group, largely composed of women, arrived at the university premises around 7:45 AM local time, congregating directly in front of the Faculty of Forestry’s Building 109. Their immediate objective was to compel the university to publicly affirm the legitimacy of President Jokowi’s diploma.

Delegation Meets with University Officials

Following the initial gathering, a delegation of four individuals representing the TPUA were granted a meeting with university officials inside room 109 of the Faculty of Forestry. The purpose of this audience was to directly address the concerns surrounding the President’s academic record.

The delegation included Tifauzia, Roy Suryo, Rismon Hasiholan, and Syukri Fadholi, each bringing their outlook to the discussion.

Calls for Transparency and Proof

Prior to the meeting, a representative of the group stated, If indeed the president has a diploma, submit it. I believe that it was handed over, the problem was completed. This statement underscores the group’s desire for concrete evidence to dispel the ongoing doubts.

Amien Rais Weighs In

Adding weight to the protest, senior politician Amien Rais was present among the demonstrators. Rais voiced his dissatisfaction with UGM’s previous explanations regarding Jokowi’s diploma, characterizing them as evasive rather than conclusive.

Yes, but right (UGM clarification) there is no proof, yes. I used to, two years ago, once provided a very simple solution, yes. So, if Jokowi’s affairs, as president, go down, to the Central Jakarta District Court, bring his diploma, ‘this is my diploma’ is finished, yes.

Amien Rais, Senior Politician

Rais suggested a straightforward solution: presenting the original diploma in court to definitively resolve the matter. This call for direct action reflects a growing sentiment among some segments of the population who seek closure on this issue.

The Broader Context of Diploma Verification

The scrutiny surrounding President Jokowi’s diploma is not an isolated incident. Globally, concerns about the authenticity of academic credentials have been on the rise. According to a 2024 report by the National Student Clearinghouse, requests for degree verification have increased by 15% in the past year, indicating a heightened awareness and demand for accountability in education.

Several companies now specialize in diploma verification services, offering institutions and individuals a means to confirm the legitimacy of degrees and certificates. This trend highlights the importance of transparency and trust in the academic sector.

UGM’s Response and Future Implications

As of the time of this report, UGM has not issued a new statement following the protest. The university’s response to the demands of the TPUA and the broader public will be closely watched, as it coudl have significant implications for the President’s image and the university’s reputation.

The ongoing debate underscores the need for clear and accessible mechanisms for verifying academic credentials, both in Indonesia and around the world. The resolution of this issue could set a precedent for future cases involving questions of academic integrity.
