Fifty years of life, seventeen studio albums, more than 150 songs released, more than two thousand concerts offered – in more than 60 countries -, more than 1.7 daily listeners on Spotify (not to mention other platforms), more than 130 million records sold; and millions of fans around the world. These are just a few Iron Maiden numbers.

La Doncella‘ is celebrating, since this 2025 it celebrates half a century of foundation. Although the celebrations have taken place throughout the year, history tells us that the band was founded by Steve Harris on December 25, 1975, in London (United Kingdom).

It’s curious to think that Iron Maidena band that at a certain point in its history was linked to occultism and even classified as satanic, has its origins in a date as deeply rooted in Catholicism as Christmas. Without a doubt, ironies of fate.

“Harris came up with the name of his new band after watching The Man in the Iron Maska film based on the novel by Alejandro Dumas, in which a torture device known as the iron maiden is mentioned,” highlights the biography of the band written by the British Neil Daniels.

The Cart & Horses bar, in Stratford (east of London), hosted the first concerts of ‘The Maiden’. It was the place where the band began to become known and earn a name on the London circuit. But he also witnessed the first disagreements and desertions within the group.

And it is that Iron Maiden He went through many training changes in his first five years of life. In fact, on the band’s debut album, released in 1980 under the name Iron Maidenthere is not a single member of the original line-up, except Steve Harris.

“Bands do not arise so spontaneously and reach consecration without changes. In the case of Iron Maiden, there were many comings and goings, especially because they started as a band of friends and, later, they included the people they needed in each position,” he told RPP the Argentine journalist and writer César Fuentes Rodríguez.

This evolution of members would not last long. Some details needed to be refined, and Steve Harris knew it. In 1982, the legendary Bruce Dickinson replaced an unpredictable Paul Di’Anno (sadly, now deceased); and so it came The Number of the Beastone of the totems of heavy metal as we know it today.

“What established the band definitively was the entry of Bruce Dickinson. There was a radical changenot so much in direction, but in volume, commitment, quality,” Rodríguez highlighted.

“They went from having a singer with whom they had had success, but who probably would not have helped them much to reach the next level, to a Bruce Dickinson who resized the meaning of the band”he added.

The fall and rise of Iron Maiden

The eighties allowed Iron Maiden to establish themselves as one of the standard bearers of the so-called New Wave of British Heavy Metal (New Wave of British Heavy Metalin Spanish).

Piece of Mind (1983), Powerslave (1984), Somewhere in Time (1986) y Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988) were resounding successes, including authentic classics, not only of the band, but of heavy metal in general.

Unfortunately, the machinery wore out. With the new decade, came a downturn in Iron Maiden. No Prayer for the Dying (1990) y Fear of the Dark (1992) were moderate successes, but far from the grandeur of the recent past. However, the real blow for the band was the departure of Adrian Smith y Bruce Dickinsontwo of the pillars of ‘La Doncella’.

Janick Gers arrived to replace Adrian Smith, while Blaze Bayley He was chosen to take up the post left by Bruce Dickinson. Sadly, the former Wolfsbane was never able to fill his shoes. These were dark times for Iron Maiden, as fans rejected the new line-up and, in addition, the new albums as well.

The X Factor (1995) y Virtual XI (1998), without being bad albums, were rejected by fans. In less than a decade, Iron Maiden went from being one of the most idolized metal bands to a group whose mere existence was in question.

But history is cyclical. And the new millennium witnessed the rebirth of Iron Maiden. Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson returned to the band, which was now established as a sextet; and they released one of the best comeback albums in history: Brave New World (2000).

With this release, Iron Maiden catapulted themselves back to stardom. The band once again filled stadiums and headlined festivals; which earned him a new wave of fans. The new generations – who knew Iron Maiden with Brave New World– They started listening to their classic albums and falling in love was immediate.

Dance of Death (2003), A Matter of Life and Death (2006) y The Final Frontier (2010) followed the path marked by Brave New World and reaffirmed their status as a cult band. At the same time, Maiden undertook monumental toursin which – with energy and virtuosity – they strengthened the idolatry of the fans.

In recent years, there have been The Book of Souls (2015) y Senjutsu (2021), perhaps misunderstood albums; in which Iron Maidenunder the direction of Steve Harris, showed its most progressive side.

The legacy of Iron Maiden

The last chapter of Iron Maiden is not yet written. But, in these first 50 years, it is impossible not to highlight what he has left for the history, not only of heavy metal, but of music in general.

“The legacy that Iron Maiden leaves is immense, not only because of the volume of the songs and the mark it left at the time. It was the most notable band of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and also the most successful, in the long run,” he highlighted. César Fuentes Rodríguez.

“There would be other bands like Saxon, Def Leppard or Diamond Head; but none had the weight that Iron Maiden finally achieved. So the legacy is immense, you can’t talk about the history of metal without mentioning Maiden, of course,” he added.

Half a century after its founding, Iron Maiden is still more relevant than everselling out tickets for their upcoming concerts – among them, one in Lima – and generating a cultural and musical movement around the world; which is a case worthy of analysis. What is the secret of this longevity? The Peruvian anthropologist Kamilo Riverosdirector of the Chalena Vásquez R. Arts Research Center, rehearses a response.

“The cultural and artistic legacy is to generate a reality in itself. Contribute with ways of creating and doing things. Open guidelines to transform into art the darkest thing that can occur in each dimension of society or human history,” he told RPP.

“Iron Maiden is one of the groups that generated a way of making metal. They built their own sound archetypein a genre that was relatively new at the time; and they developed their own forms of expression within the language of rock music,” he stated.

Perhaps the secret to this longevity lies in not wasting time looking for those lost years, and realizing that we are living our golden years.

Long live, Iron Maiden.
