The largest tree of life of flowering plants

2024-05-07 17:45:07

Scientists have created the largest evolutionary family tree of flowering plants to date.

A doubt haunted Charles Darwin, father of the Theory of Evolution, until his death: the sudden appearance and rapid diversification of plants that have flowers and fruits, the so-called angiosperms, which represent 90% of the plants on the planet. For him, it was an “abominable mystery” that numerous subsequent investigations have attempted to clarify.

Now, a study carried out by a team including Manuel de la Estrella, from the University of Córdoba (UCO) in Spain, and Alexandre R. Zuntini, from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, Richmond, United Kingdom, provides a little more light on the mystery by generating a broad evolutionary family tree of angiosperms, after analyzing 9,500 species, 200 fossils and 1.8 billion “letters” of genetic code.

The study, led by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, an institution that houses one of the largest collections of plants, involved 279 scientists from 139 organizations and 27 countries. This broad participation has facilitated access to collections from around the world to analyze DNA, compare different sequences and establish relationships between different plant species. Thus, the authors of the study have worked both with recently collected samples (with well-preserved DNA) and with samples preserved in herbaria,

Activision Blizzard must pay more than $20 million for patent infringement

#Activision #Blizzard #pay #million #patent #infringement

Activision Blizzard has lost a legal battle that has been going on for nine years. The case revolved around patent infringement and Activision Blizzard has now been found guilty of it. As a result, the company must pay $23.4 million in damages.

In concrete terms, this concerns two old patents of Acceleration Bay that relate to technology surrounding networking and broadcasting. This technology is said to have been used in various multiplayer games from Activision Blizzard, although the lawsuit mainly concerned World of Warcraft and Call of Duty.

In a response, Activision Blizzard said it was disappointed with the outcome of the case and plans to appeal. The company refers, among other things, to the age of the patents (the technology was invented almost 25 years ago) and states that it has simply never used the technology in question.

Acceleration Bay still has similar cases against Take-Two and EA.

Wolves with manes are wild, long-legged animals similar to foxes and dogs

Scattered Wolves. PHOTO / DAILY

RIO DE JANEIRO – Wolf The maned wolf at first glance looks like a mixture of a fox and a dog. However, did you know that despite its nickname “wolf”, the maned wolf is not actually a real wolf?

The maned wolf is a separate species in the genus Chrysocyon. Even though they belong to the Canidae family (the same family as dogs and wolves), they are not closely related to wolves or foxes.

The maned wolf is scientifically classified as Chrysocyon brachyurus, placing it in a category of its own.

Although commonly found in South America, urban sprawl poses a significant threat to its population, especially in Uruguay where it is nearly extinct. The use of these animal parts in traditional medicine also adds to the challenge, although there is no evidence of their health benefits.

With dense red fur, elongated limbs, and prominent erect ears, the maned wolf can weigh up to 66 pounds and reach nearly 1 m in length, as noted by The Smithsonian.

This animal is omnivorous and active at night, thriving in savanna-like areas, especially in northeastern Brazil.
