Mega Auction: More Than Just a Sale
Unlike regular auctions, the mega auction, held every three years, spans two days. This signifies its significance, as franchises meticulously build their squads for the next three seasons (2025-27).
Record Number of Players
A staggering 1574 players, including 1165 Indians and 409 overseas, registered for the auction, showcasing the global talent pool. Players hail from diverse cricketing nations, from established Full Members to emerging teams like Italy, Canada, Netherlands, Scotland, USA, and UAE.
Purse Power and Retention Strategies
Each franchise boasts a purse of INR 120 crore to assemble their squad. Following retentions, Punjab Kings emerge with the largest remaining purse (INR 110.5 crore) after retaining just two players. Conversely, Rajasthan Royals, along with Kolkata Knight Riders, retained six players, leaving them with the smallest purse (INR 41 crore) and zero Right-to-Match (RTM) options.
RTM: Second Chance at Retention
Teams can retain up to six players, with five capped and two uncapped maximum. The retention strategy allows franchises to buy back players via RTM options at the auction.
Mumbai Indians’ Masterstroke
Mumbai Indians’ retention strategy grabbed headlines, securing their core Indian players – Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, and Tilak Varma – for a combined INR 75 crore.
