Distry, a seasoned performer in the world of musicals, shares insights into the enduring popularity of the genre, his personal journey with iconic roles, and the unique connection he forges with audiences worldwide. From Starmania to Moulin Rouge, the “Musicals Musicals” show encapsulates a broad spectrum of musical theater hits, performed by a talented ensemble of seven singers.
The show is a vibrant tapestry of approximately 60 to 70 songs, drawing from the most beloved musicals, spanning from the groundbreaking Starmania to the dazzling Moulin Rouge—essentially, from the visionary Luc Plamondon to the contemporary icon, Lady Gaga. Seven vocalists breathe new life into thes timeless pieces over an enthralling two-hour performance.
revisiting Romeo: A role That Never Truly Left
Distry reflects on his continued association with Romeo and Juliet, a role he has embraced in numerous international tours since its initial success. Contrary to the notion of a revival after two decades, Distry emphasizes that the character has remained a constant presence in his career.
Romeo and Juliet has been a recurring chapter in my career since 2001. From 2006 onward,we embarked on extensive tours, performing over 100 shows across Southeast Korea,China, and Taiwan. Therefore, it’s not a matter of revisiting the role after 20 years; it’s more accurate to say that the role has never truly left me.
A Life Transformed: The Global Reach of Musical Theater
The impact of Romeo and Juliet on distry’s life and career is undeniable. The musical catapulted him into the public eye, not only in France but also across Switzerland, Belgium, Korea, and Russia. The digital age further amplifies this reach, with Distry noting a important listenership in Mexico,a country he has yet to visit, highlighting the show’s global resonance.
This musical has profoundly shaped my life, both professionally and personally. It introduced me to audiences in France,Switzerland,Belgium,Korea,Russia, and beyond. For instance, my Spotify artist profile reveals over 90,000 monthly listeners in Mexico, a testament to the show’s impact, despite my never having performed there.
The Resurgence of Musicals: A Cultural Phenomenon
The current surge in popularity of musicals, especially those from the 1990s and 2000s like Romeo and Juliet and The ten Commandments, reflects a broader trend in entertainment. This revival is fueled by nostalgia, innovative staging, and the universal themes explored in these productions. The success of notre-Dame de Paris in China paved the way for other musicals in Southeast Asia, establishing a thriving market for international productions. According to recent industry reports, Seoul now ranks as the third-largest market for international musicals, trailing only Broadway and London.
I believe we’re witnessing a resurgence of interest in certain musicals, such as romeo and Juliet and The Ten Commandments. Notre-Dame de Paris also played a pivotal role, particularly in Asia. Following their success in France in the late ’90s, they ventured into China, effectively opening doors for other productions in Southeast Asia. It’s worth noting that seoul has become the third most important city in the world for international musicals, after Broadway and London.
France is also experiencing a similar trend, with long-running productions like The Lion King at the Mogador theater in Paris demonstrating the growing appetite for musical theater in Europe.
For Distry, the most rewarding aspect of performing is the connection with the audience. The collective experience of singing along to familiar songs creates a sense of unity and escapism, offering a welcome respite from everyday concerns.
It’s always a tremendous joy to be on stage and witness the audience singing along, knowing all the lyrics by heart. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience to share that connection with them. These shows offer a carefree atmosphere where people can set aside their worries and immerse themselves in the music and dance. It’s a very welcoming and inclusive environment!
A Multifaceted Art Form: The Allure of Musicals
Distry’s journey in musical theater began at a young age, evolving into a deep thankfulness for the art form’s diverse elements. The combination of singing, dancing, and acting provides a rich and constantly evolving creative outlet. Productions like The Three Musketeers require performers to develop new skills, such as fencing, further enriching the experience.
I started at the age of 17, and as then, it’s been a natural progression, much like any other professional field. I didn’t have extensive knowledge of this world at 17, but I grew to love it through the roles I was given and the performances I was able to deliver. Today, I’m incredibly happy to be part of this environment that blends song, dance, and acting, encompassing a wide range of artistic disciplines. For example, the Three Musketeers required me to learn swordsmanship and stage combat for over a year, which was a engaging experience. Some shows incorporate pyrotechnics or circus elements, providing continuous opportunities for learning and growth. It’s always enriching to collaborate with such a diverse group of talented individuals.
A Song of Love: Distry’s Enduring Connection to Romeo and Juliet
When asked to choose a single song from Romeo and Juliet, Distry selects “Aimer” (“To Love”), a testament to the enduring power of love and its central role in the human experience.
It would have to be “Aimer” (“To Love”), because even after singing it for so many years, I still find it incredibly beautiful. After all, what is life without love? It would be a very sad existence.
Beyond Romeo: Distry’s Musical Preferences
While romeo and Juliet holds a special place in Distry’s heart, he acknowledges the vast and diverse landscape of musical theater. He expresses admiration for the Michael Jackson musical, praising the performer embodying the iconic pop star.
It’s difficult to choose just one favorite musical, as there are so many remarkable productions. However,I’ve heard rave reviews about the Michael Jackson musical, particularly the unbelievable performance of the actor portraying michael.
Anticipation Builds: Performing for the Marseille Audience
distry expresses his excitement about performing for the Marseille audience, a city he has come to know and appreciate. The prospect of connecting with familiar faces and exploring new corners of the city adds to the anticipation.
Yes, I know the Marseille audience, and I’m very excited to perform for them. I have friends in Marseille, and each time I visit, I discover more of the city, its hidden gems, and even develop a list of favorite places and restaurants. It’s a city that I truly enjoy, and I can’t wait to be there!
