He engaged Dieter Neupert, a Swiss-based lawyer, to draft the necessary sale contract. Dr. Neupert notified Qipco Holdings of the family’s wish to sell in February 2020.
Sheikh Saud’s daughter, Sheikha Sara bint Saoud Al-Thani, was unaware of her brother’s plans until March. Upon learning about the proposed sale, she was shocked and informed her mother, who echoed her objection to the sale. After consulting with other family members, they collectively decided not to sell The Idol’s Eye.
The Court’s Decision: Resolution of the Dispute
Qipco Holdings, which held a right of first refusal on the diamond, requested Christie’s to provide a valuation. Christie’s estimated the diamond’s auction value at $7-10 million. After attempts to get Elanus Holdings (linked to Sheikh Saud) to provide its own valuation, the matter escalated to London’s High Court.
During the trial, Elanus argued that Dr. Neupert was not acting on their behalf and had withdrawn any intention to sell the diamond. The High Court, presided over by Deputy Judge Simon Birt, dismissed the case. Elanus was not compelled to sell The Idol’s Eye, respecting the family’s collective desire to retain the diamond.
