They continue to seek more rotation help, however, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. New York remains interested in Sean Manaea, who put up excellent numbers for the club in 2024 before hitting free agency. Should that fail, the Mets could pivot to Walker Buehler or other free-agent options, such as Jack Flaherty or Nick Pivetta. Phillies exploring trades The Philadelphia Phillies are exploring trades involving veteran contributors, likely as a means to address other segments of the roster. Here's the details from Matt Gelb of The Athletic: "The Phillies have continued to dangle Alec Bohm and Ranger Suárez, according to major-league sources, in an attempt to acquire big-league pieces. They have made Castellanos available, those sources said, but any trade would require the Phillies to pay down much of the remaining million on his contract. Cubs still targeting rotation help The Chicago Cubs recently inked Matthew Boyd to a two-year, million pact, and their rotation already includes Shota Imanaga, Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon, and Javier Assad. Even so, the Cubs still appear to be in the market for starting pitching, Sahadev Sharma and Patrick Mooney of The Athletic report. Sharma and Mooney add that Walker Buehler remains of interest to the Cubs, depending on what kind of contract he's able to command. Yankees among teams interested in Estrada Second baseman Thairo Estrada is coming off an age-28 season in 2024 in which he batted .217/.247/.343 with nine home runs in 96 games for the Giants. Normally, that's not the kind of production that would draw attention, even for a second baseman like Estrada, but he has a stronger offensive track record prior to this past season, and he's not yet at an age that typically raises concern about decline. Speaking of all that, ....com's Mark Feinsand reports that the New York Yankees are among the teams with some level of interest in the free agent. They may be eyeing Estrada for a utility role – the likely angle – or as a potential replacement for second baseman Gleyber Torres, who is himself a free agent. ....com's Thomas Harding also linked the Rockies to him.">Thairo Estrada</a> Returns to Rockies After Injury

Thairo Estrada Activated by Rockies Following Wrist Injury

By Amelia Stein | DENVER – 2025/05/31 00:29:16

Second baseman Thairo Estrada has been reactivated by the colorado Rockies after being sidelined with a broken right wrist sustained during spring training. He had a .304 batting average (7 for 23) in five rehab games with triple-A albuquerque.

Interim manager Warren Schaeffer believes Estrada’s return will provide a notable boost to the team, which currently holds a 9-47 record, the worst through 56 games for any major league club in the modern era (since 1901).

“I think it’s going to be a big addition,” Schaeffer said. “I mean, everyday second baseman. Got a lot of big league experience. The way he plays the game – hard. He takes everything seriously. He loves baseball.”

The 29-year-old Estrada has a career batting average of .251 with 48 home runs, 52 stolen bases, and a .694 OPS in six major league seasons. He debuted with the New York Yankees in 2019 and spent the last four years with San Francisco.

Estrada, a right-handed hitter, was scheduled to bat fourth against Mets left-hander david Peterson at Citi Field in the first game of a three-game series.

“It fits there today against a left-hander,” Schaeffer said. “Thairo’s a professional hitter. For me, you can hit him anywhere in the lineup.”

“I think it’s going to be a big addition. I mean, everyday second baseman. Got a lot of big league experience. He loves baseball.”

In a corresponding roster move, the Rockies selected outfielder Sam Hilliard’s contract from Albuquerque, making him available off the bench.

Outfielder Nick Martini was designated for assignment, and infielder Adael Amador was optioned to triple-A on Thursday.

“Just shaking things up a little bit,” Schaeffer said. “Sam brings speed. Sam brings a solid glove in the outfield. My style of baseball is putting the ball in play and running, and being aggressive.”

Estrada signed a $4 million, one-year contract with colorado in January. His contract includes a $3.25 million salary for this year and a $7 million mutual option for 2026 with a $750,000 buyout.

Estrada’s wrist fracture occurred in March during a spring training game when he was hit by a 97 mph sinker thrown by Texas Rangers right-hander Kumar Rocker.
