Restaurant Chain TGI Fridays Files for Bankruptcy protección

The iconic American restaurant chain TGI Fridays has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a Texas federal court. According to a statement from the company, they are seeking to secure their long-term viability amidst a steep drop in sales.

Industry Struggles

TGI Fridays, long known for its vibrant atmosphere and iconic button-filled uniforms, has seen its customer base dwindle as food preferences and habits have shifted. The chain’s bartenders were even famously credited with training Tom Cruise for his 1988 film "Cocktail." However, like many sit-down chain restaurants, they have faced significant challenges in recent years.

After a U.S. bankruptcy judge approved Red Lobster’s reorganization plan in September, and Italian American food chain Buca di Beppo sought bankruptcy protection in August, TGI Fridays is the latest chain to feel the brunt of the market’s changing landscape. Customers are now more likely to choose delivery or upscale fast-food chains like Chipotle or Shake Shack.

The Impact of the Pandemic

The primary driver behind TGI Fridays’ financial woes has been attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic and its capital structure, as stated by executive chairman Rohit Manocha. The pandemic significantly impacted the restaurant industry by altering dining habits and causing widespread closures and slowdowns.

In response to these challenges, TGI Fridays attempted to pivot by entering the ghost kitchen market. However, among the major creditors owed money by the company is delivery service DoorDash, reflecting the company’s range of financial woes.

Falling Sales and Store Closures

Founded in 1965, TGI Fridays peaked in 2008 with 601 U.S. locations and a $2 billion business. Since then, its sales in the U.S. have significantly decreased. According to Kevin Schimpf, director of industry research at Technomic, sales in the U.S. were $728 million in 2023, a 15% drop from the prior year.

This sharp decline in revenue has led to a significant reduction in the number of restaurants. As of January 2023, TGI Fridays closed 36 locations, and dozens more have closed recently. Today, the company operates 163 restaurants in the U.S., down from 269 in 2022.

Franchise and International Outings

It’s important to note that TGI Fridays owns and operates only 39 restaurants in the U.S., while a separate entity, TGI Fridays Franchisor, has franchised the brand to 56 independent owners in 41 countries. These franchise outlets remain open.

Meanwhile, a United Kingdom-based franchisee, Hostmore, has also sought debt protection and abruptly closed several locations following a failed takeover deal. This adds another layer of financial strain for the company.

The Future of TGI Fridays

As the company works through its bankruptcy proceedings, it remains to be seen how the future of TGI Fridays will unfold. Despite its significant history and cultural impact, the chain must adapt to changing consumer behaviors and economic conditions to ensure its long-term survival.
