Texas lawmakers have quietly ceased funding teh state’s border wall project, casting doubt on its future after only a small portion of the planned construction has been completed.
Four years after Gov. Greg Abbott announced Texas would be the first state to build a border wall, the project’s future is now uncertain.According to the Texas Tribune, lawmakers have quietly stopped funding the project,”leaving only scattered segments that cover a small fraction of the border.”
The decision, made during the recent legislative session, leaves the future of the wall unclear. Only 8% of the 805 miles identified for construction is complete, costing taxpayers over $3 billion. The Texas Tribune reported the wall has gaps that migrants and smugglers can easily bypass and was built on ranches in rural areas where illegal border crossings are less likely.
Texas Facilities Commission (TFC) Executive Director Mike Novak reported on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, that “as of that date, Texas had 66.4 miles of the border wall programme completed.” Active construction is underway at 15 locations in six border areas: Cameron, Starr, Zapata, Webb, Maverick, and Val Verde Counties.
