Chanukkah begins tonight. Then we remember the victory of the Maccabees over the Greek ruler Antiochushe who desecrated the temple, murdered thousands of Jews and forbade them to practice their religion. The Jews rebelled and rededicated the temple in Jerusalem. There the oil miracle happened. When the temple was to be lit, the oil only lasted for one day, but miraculously it burned for eight – until new oil could be produced. That’s why we celebrate Chanukkah for eight days and light a new candle every night in Chanukki.
