“I have made mistakes, I have done things lightly but not for those shortcomings that are being contested against me. In many cases I simply provided my discount card. I did not enrich myself in any way, I worked there for over twenty years”.

This is essentially how the 43-year-old former cashier accused of thefts in a store in Termini defended herself. The woman made use of the right not to respond but made spontaneous statements before the investigating judge as part of the preventive interrogation in the investigation by the Rome Prosecutor’s Office which sees 44 people under investigation, including police officers and carabinieri, accused of aggravated theft for a value of almost 180 thousand euros. Prosecutor Stefano Opilio disputes around eighty episodes that occurred in approximately three months in 2024. For this affair the suspect, defended by lawyers Carlo Testa Piccolomini and Irene Bisiani, was fired. The Prosecutor’s Office has requested that four of the store’s employees be arrested in prison. The investigating judge reserved his decision.
