Terence Stamp, ‘Superman’ Villain, Dies at 87

The British actor Terence Stamp, renowned for his portrayal of General Zod in “Superman” and “Superman II,” has passed away at the age of 87, according to his family.

The Oscar-nominated actor’s death was confirmed in a statement released by his family to Reuters on Sunday morning. A death notice was also posted online. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

“He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come,” the family’s statement to Reuters noted. “We ask for privacy at this sad time.”

Born in London’s East End in 1938 to Ethel esther and Thomas Stamp, a tugboat stoker, Terence Stamp experienced the bombings of London during World War II. after the war, he initially worked in advertising before securing a scholarship to drama school, Reuters reported.

“I couldn’t tell anyone I wanted to be an actor as it was out of the question. I would have been laughed at,” he said, according to Reuters.

Stamp’s acting career began with the 1962 film “Billy Budd,” a role that earned him an Oscar nomination.

A Diverse and Acclaimed Career

Over his six-decade career, Terence Stamp appeared in numerous films, including Pier Paolo Pasolini’s “Theorem,” “A Season in Hell,” and “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” where he portrayed a transgender woman.

“From wearing the high heels, my spine was completely out of alignment, and it took me about six months to get my spine re-orchestrated.”

He also garnered praise for his performance in Steven Soderbergh’s 1999 crime drama “The Limey.”

However,Terence Stamp is perhaps best known for his role as General Zod,the Kryptonian villain,in 1978’s “Superman” and its 1980 sequel,”Superman II.” He later returned to the Superman universe as jor-el in the TV series “Smallville.”

Terence Stamp’s filmography includes “Valkyrie” with tom cruise, “The Adjustment bureau” alongside Matt damon, “Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace,” and films directed by Tim Burton.

His final film appearance was in 2021’s “last night in Soho.”
