Tenerife Wave Deaths: 4 Dead in Natural Pool Tragedy

by drbyos

On Sunday afternoon, a freak wave overwhelmed some people who were bathing in a natural pool in the area of the Los Gigantes cliffs, on the southwestern coast of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands: four of them died and one is missing. Like the other islands that form the Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic, Tenerife is a well-known tourist destination, and among its attractions there are natural pools, i.e. artificial pools or natural basins that are found along the coasts and are filled with ocean water. The one in question is known as Charco de Isla Cangrejo and on Sunday it was full of people who were swimming, despite a ban due to the danger of waves and a fence that prevented access.

Two of the dead were Slovakian and the other two Romanian, their governments said. Among them are a 35-year-old man, a 55-year-old woman and another who died on Monday after being taken to hospital. Two other people were injured.
