Xishuangbanna Welcomes ASEAN Tourist Groups Visa-Free
Tourism in Xishuangbanna, a picturesque prefecture in Yunnan Province, China, has taken a significant leap forward. The National Immigration Administration (NIA) has announced that tourist groups from ten Southeast Asian nations will be able to enter Xishuangbanna visa-free, fostering increased regional interactions and tourism growth.
New Visa-Free Policy Introduced
The NIA made this announcement to enhance Xishuangbanna’s appeal as a tourist destination. According to the new rules, groups of at least two individuals from Brunei, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cambodia will enjoy visa-free entry and stay for up to six days.
Entry Points and Travel Restrictions
Tourists from these ASEAN countries can enter and exit China seamlessly through the Xishuangbanna Gasa International Airport, Mohan Railway Port, and Mohan Highway Port. However, their travel is restricted to the Xishuangbanna Prefecture administrative region.
This policy marks a significant step towards enhancing autonomous opening-up and supporting Yunnan’s development as the Chinese pivot of opening-up to south and southeast Asia. It is of great importance to advancing the tourism industry in southwest China, promoting people-to-people exchanges between China and foreign countries, and deepening the China-ASEAN comprehensive strategic partnership.
China’s Strong Inbound Tourism Growth
China’s inbound and outbound travel numbers saw a remarkable increase in 2024. According to national immigration data, the total number of international travelers last year was 64.882 million, showing a year-on-year surge of over 82.9 percent. Specifically, the number of visa-free entries jumped to 20.11 million, marking an impressive year-on-year increase of more than 112.3 percent.
China saw a positive trend in inbound tourism, with a significant increase in foreign visitor numbers in 2024.
Continued Expansion of Visa-Free Travel
China has consistently worked on expanding its visa-free travel policy. In November 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced a policy expansion, allowing nationals from nine additional countries—Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Estonia, Northern Macedonia, Montenegro, Malta, Latvia, and Japan—to travel visa-free to China until December 31, 2025.
During the same month, China further enriched its visa-free travel policy by including Denmark, Norway, South Korea, Slovakia, Finland, Andorra, Iceland, Monaco, and Liechtenstein on the list.
Boosting Regional Cooperation and Tourism
The new visa-free entry policy for ASEAN countries and the recent expansions demonstrate China’s commitment to enhancing international cooperation and boosting tourism. These measures aim to attract more foreign visitors by streamlining entry procedures, thereby contributing to regional economic development and cultural exchanges.
Conclusion
This policy shift signals a new era of openness and cooperation for Xishuangbanna and China’s broader southern region. By fostering greater connectivity among nations, China aims to strengthen economic ties and cultural bonds within Southeast Asia, ultimately benefiting both the host countries and the visiting tourists.
