Burning fuel depots plunge Tehran into darkness in broad daylight

The inhabitants of Tehran woke up on Sunday morning with the impression of still being in the middle of the night, with thick black smoke emanating from several attacked oil depots plunging the Iranian capital into darkness.

At 8 a.m. (Paris time), vehicles were still forced to drive with headlights on on Valiasr Avenue, 17 kilometers long, which crosses the Iranian capital from north to south. Rainy weather with thick gray clouds adds further confusion to the reason for the unusual darkness. In the sky, these clouds mingle with the thick black smoke from oil depots still on fire.

Oil is still burning at one of the four fuel depots affected in Tehran, which left at least six dead and around twenty injured, according to the authorities. Agence France-Presse saw flames flare up again and crackle more than twelve hours after the Israeli strikes.

The governor of Tehran province, Mohammad Sadegh Motamedian, quoted by the IRNA agency, announced in the morning that the distribution of gasoline was “temporarily suspended” but called on the population not to “don’t worry”. Distribution is now limited to 20 liters per vehicle. Long queues stretch along Tehran’s gas stations on Sunday.
