“Ligo”: Eight Decades of Latvian Folk Dance Tradition

The esteemed Latvian stage folk dance ensemble Ligo is commemorating its 80th anniversary,alongside the 50th anniversary of its middle-generation dance group. This milestone is being celebrated with a series of four concerts across the Kurzeme region, each representing a stage in the life cycle of the mythical Ligo flower.

These performances are not merely recitals; they are symbolic journeys. from the initial sowing of the seed to the vibrant bloom at the summer solstice, each concert mirrors the ensemble’s own evolution and the individual growth of its dancers. The culmination of this concert series is planned to coincide with the summer solstice celebrations at the Latvian Ethnographic Open Air Museum, a testament to the ensemble’s deep roots in Latvian culture.

A Symbolic Journey: The “Ligo” Flower Cycle

The concert series uses the metaphor of the flower’s journey to highlight the meaning of each dancer’s contribution to the ensemble. This artistic choice allows the audience to connect with the performance on a deeper level,understanding the dedication and passion that fuels Ligo‘s enduring legacy.

The concerts will feature performances by various Ligo groups, including TDA “Ligo”, VPDK “Ligo”, VPDK “Sen Ligo”, SDK “Ligo graduates”, and the TDA “Ligo” children and youth studio.
